Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool Major Update v 5.0

Our ADF performance audit tool is growing and getting more advanced with each release. Current major update v 5.0 brings ADF Click History integration and allows to track ADF UI client request time. This allows to understand, how long it takes to execute action from user perspective. Combined with ADF BC performance monitoring, we could give precise answer about performance bottlenecks from top to bottom.

New features in v 5.0:

1. Redesigned UI with ADF 12.2.1 Responsive template. UI is aligned with Alta UI best practices

2. Group by ECID functionality. We can track request action from top to bottom. This includes client request time (time needed to complete action on UI, including network traffic time). Executed SQL queries and any issues in ADF BC performance for the given request

3. ADF Click history logging. Click history data about UI performance is being intercepted and logged into Red Samurai DB, for analysis. This gives a database of all user requests and time for each request

4. User request statistics visualization dashboard

Here you can see sample data from ADF demo application. User request statistics are presented to help in understanding system performance. Time for each user request is visualized, along with detail information about request (component ID, name, type, etc.). Average times are presented, along with user statistics and top actions. We display total requests count vs. recent requests, to visualize the load on the system:


Each of the logged requests can be tracked down by ECID. Here we can see a list of VO's invoked during UI request and any slow performance behavior happening in ADF BC:


In the next updated v 6.0, we are going to implement UI behavior analysis, to extract most common UI usage patterns in ADF application.

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 4.0 - Web Client Request Monitoring and Complete Query Analysis

I'm excited to announce, we have released a new version of our RSA audit tool. This is a major update after previous version released in February 2015 - Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.4 - ADF Task Flow Statistics with Oracle DMS Servlet Integration.

It is already 3 years, since initial version - Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool - Runtime Diagnosis for ADF Applications. We are using it for many of our customers to monitor ADF performance in both test and production environments. Many new features were added during these years, more features to come.

RSA Audit v4.0 New Features

1. RSA Audit v4.0 dashboard is supporting ADF 12c and Alta UI look


2. Web Client Request Time monitoring. Supported with ADF 11g and 12c. Generic method tracks request time for all ADF UI components. Logged data can be analysed through ADF UI dashboard or directly in the DB. Request time represents complete time from user action in the browser, until request is completed. This includes real user experience - browser processing time, network time, server side time and ADF BC/DB processing times. Runs in VERBOSE logging mode


3. Detail information about ADF fragment, button or other ADF UI component involved into request is being logged together with request processing time and is accessible from audit dashboard. This helps to identify slow actions spanning from Web Client to DB


4. Information about each request is grouped, this allows to compare differences between multiple requests and identify bottlenecks in the application performance


5. Duplicate Queries. Allows to track all executed VO’s, very helpful to identify redundant VO’s executions. Groups VO executions per ECID, this helps to identify VO’s re-executed multiple times during the same request. Runs in MEDIUM logging mode


6. VO’s executed from the same ECID are automatically highlighted - this simplifies redundant queries analysis


7. Number of duplicate executions of VO’s per ECID is calculated and presented in the table and sunburst chart


8. We calculate top VO’s per AM. This helps to set priorities for SQL tuning and understand heavy used VO’s


9. Sunburst chart displays visual representation of duplicate and top VO’s per AM

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.4 - ADF Task Flow Statistics with Oracle DMS Servlet Integration

We have integrated Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool with Oracle DMS Spy Servlet. Integration is dynamic and doesn't require any extra configuration. It brings out of the box information about ADF Task Flow usage and performance. This means we are analysing from now on not only ADF BC performance data, but ADF Controller data also.

DMS Spy Servlet context is accessed in certain intervals and we are not only displaying DMS data, but storing it inside our audit tables. This allows to keep historical data and preserve it between WLS restarts - this is not possible with DMS Spy Servlet alone.

New tree map graph displays ADF Task Flow usage in the application - larger box, more frequently Task Flow is accessed:


Graph is clickable, user could select a box and detail data for the Task Flow will be displayed. We are displaying a number of Active/Maximum Active Task Flows over time. Average load time is logged and displayed - this allows to identify Task Flows with slow performance:

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.3 - Audit Improvements

Christmas present from Red Samurai - ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.3. This is a next version after 3.2 (Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.2 - Large Fetch and Full Scan Audit Optimizations) with a set of features improving audit process.

Implemented features in v 3.3:

1. Logging audit data from multiple WebLogic servers

Audit is improved to log data from several WebLogic servers into the same DB schema, Audit UI dashboard allows to select data from specific server or display combined data from all of them. This helps when ADF application is installed in the cluster environment or different application instances are running on different servers.

Changing current audit server address in UI dashboard, to display audit data logged from that server. Here is the example of showing data from all servers, this is by default:


If user selects DefaultServer:7101, data is filtered from selected server only (there are 30 issues displayed):


Select another server - TestServer:7101 and only one logged issue will be displayed:


2. Data Source switch

UI dashboard is capable to switch between different data sources. This is useful, if there are different DB schemas, where audit data is logged. From the single UI dashboard, on runtime, user could decide which audit data he wants to display


3. Option to turn on/off audit globally with -Dredsamurai.audit=on JVM parameter

It is much easier now to turn on/off audit when it is installed in ADF application. This can be controlled with JVM parameter -Dredsamurai.audit=on/off:

Oracle Cloud Friendly - Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit

I have deployed our tool for ADF performance monitoring to Oracle Java Cloud service. It runs perfectly on the cloud, monitors slow performance and allows to analyse collected performance data. All data is stored in Oracle Database Cloud.

You can access performance monitoring dashboard using this address. Access will be available for a month or so, until my trial account will expire. You would need to use following login credentials - user: redsam, password: We1come@, identity: ltredsamuraictrial99050. You can login and play online with our performance audit dashboard.

There is ADF demo application deployed as well, Summit App - accessible here (same login credentials). This standard demo application is extended with our audit listener to log slow ADF performance into Oracle Database Cloud instance. Use it to generate some audit data, simply by navigating through the application, updating and inserting data.

This is a main screen of Summit sample application (accessible here), I'm using it to track ADF performance. You could open this application, do several actions and check in performance dashboard to see if any slow actions were reported:


Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit tool, main dashboard displays various performance issues (accessible here) logged. Audited application is fairly basic, this is why I have set performance thresholds to relatively low values - VO execution time to 10 milliseconds, large fetch to 50 rows and slow activation to 300 milliseconds:


You could select issue from the list and check details -Application Module, View Object names. SQL statements with bind variables are available for slow SQL executions. There are very helpful features available, such as historical performance analysis option and application health automatic calculation.

Slow activation tab displays slow activation events, this helps to locate slowest activation Application Modules and possibly to eliminate such slow activations by Application Module parameters tuning:


Drill down displays large fetch and full scan issues for selected Application Module. The most problematic VO instances are displayed first in the graph:


Same graph can be displayed in table view (very helpful for performance troubleshooting) with special sorting method:


You could go and view weekly/monthly history for reported performance issues based on individual VO instance:


Overall system performance screen displays system statistics - queries, transactions, logged users, activations:


System load summary could be helpful, it allows to understand general system load and see the most frequent operations:

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.2 - Large Fetch and Full Scan Audit Optimizations

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit tool was updated with new features. Current update v 3.2 is focused on improvements for Large Fetch issues auditing, additionally we are able to track Full Scans (when user is fetching all rows and row count exceeds a threshold).

There are two additional threshold parameters introduced - WAT (Wait Activation Time) and WFT (Wait Fetch Time). These two are used to track long activation and fetch times in more accurate way. For simplified migration process from v 3.1, if no configuration is set in the database - default values are applied:


Large Fetch issue reports time it took to fetch rows, before it was reported only a number of rows fetched:


Audit tool knows how to track Full Scan - issue when user is fetching all rows and number of fetched rows exceeds Large Fetch threshold. This is useful, as it allows to understand specific cases, where we could optimise ADF code and potentially avoid fetching all rows:


Full Scan is reported together with all other issues, it is included to be a part of Performance Analysis graph:


Slow Query drill down was updated, to display VO instances with most recent slow query issues first (in red - number of issues in the recent 5 days):


Table with most recent Slow Query issues was redesigned to display issues in better ordered way. Today issues are displayed first, then issues from Yesterday, followed by Latest in 5 days and then All issues. Average time for each slow VO instance is calculated and displayed:


Daily Trend for VO instance was introduced in v 3.1, now tool also supports Monthly Trend - this allows to understand performance tuning impact better:


Large Fetch drill down was updated, it displays proportion of Large Fetch and Full Scan issues. List of VO instances reported with Large Fetch issues is redesigned in the similar way as for the Slow Query:


Today, Yesterday, Latest (5 days), and All issues are displayed. Average time is calculated and displayed for VO instance large fetch. Monthly Trend is calculated in the similar way as for the Slow Query.

Graphs displaying large number of days are configured with zooming - Daily Transactions and Logged Users graphs support zooming now:


User can zoom in data, this helps to analyse data points in specific days:

Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit Tool v 3.1 - Drill Down Analysis Improvements

We have new improvements in Red Samurai ADF Performance Audit tool. Update 3.1 is focused on new features in drill down reports for Slow Queries and Large Fetches.

Current day occurrences (in red) for Slow Queries are calculated per individual VO instance, along with latest occurrences (in yellow) and total occurrences. This helps to track outcome of performance fixes and understand if additional tuning is required for specific VO instance:


It is possible to select VO instance and display Weekly Trend - graph displaying distribution of reported Slow Queries per during previous days. This helps to understand, how reported issues were distributed recently and if tuning is producing any positive effect:


The same statistics are reported for Large Fetch issues in VO instances:

Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool v 3.0 - Getting Smarter

Our ADF Performance Audit tool is growing and getting smarter. Current release v 3.0 is focusing on collected audit data reporting effectiveness. There were many features added since early release in 2012 - Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool - Runtime Diagnosis for ADF Applications. Why v 3.0 release is smarter? Because it can tell ADF application health. We are collecting and analysing multiple ADF application performance metrics and calculating LED status - red, yellow or green to indicate ADF application health (see top right corner):


Application health indication can be drilled down to see more detailed metrics about ADF application performance:


My favourite new feature - performance analysis monitor. We display full history for performance issues, logins, queries and transactions. It is very easy to see and compare ADF application performance in time:


We are not only reporting data, but also analysing it. We apply special algorithm to smooth data and display trends in ADF application usage and number of issues:


This helps to understand, if ADF performance issue are result of higher load on the system or ADF BC is not tuned.

We also display total distribution of activations per each AM - this helps to understand AM's under heavy activations and tune ADF BC configuration:

Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool v 2.8 - Activation Focus

Here we come again - new minor update for Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool is prepared in our labs. Update 2.8 is focused on more accurate ADF BC activation time tracking. As you may already know, from my previous blog post - ADF BC Performance - View Object Instance Lazy Activation, ADF BC may apply deferred activation for VO instance. If instance is not used in the current Page Definition, this instance will be activated later, when user opens a page or fragment with such VO instance. For more technical details and sample application, please read my blog post mentioned above. We are keeping this behaviour in mind, when logging slow activations, this allows to understand real impact of slow activations and display it in the audit reports.

Drill down graph for slow activations analysis is updated with search functionality, you can browse through activations using different search criterias (such as time, data, VO's involved, etc.):


I'm filtering here all slow activations reported by date. I can see there are many slow activations reported with time close to 0 - 30 seconds. I could restrict my search criteria by filtering activation time in the interval of 0 - 30 seconds:


It is much easier now to analyse and drill down into group of slow activations.

The size of the point reflects number of VO instances involved into activation group. 33 VO instances are involved in this specific case, other details as time, records fetched, etc. are displayed as well:

Update for Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool - v 2.4

This weekend we have finalized latest update for our ADF runtime performance audit tool - Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool v 2.4. You can read about features included into previous update v 2.3 in this post - Update for Red Samurai Performance Audit Tool - v 2.3. Current update v 2.4 is focused on Slow Query and Large Fetch drill down screens usability. We provide more detailed information to understand how your ADF application performs recently and how applied tuning improves performance.

List of improvements in v 2.4:

1. Improved nested Application Modules activation auditing

2. Improved first screen of the performance dashboard application. Types of Issues graph displays calculated total number of issues. There is option to filter issues by type:


3. Drill down screen for Slow Queries is more intelligent now. It displays latest issue occurrences (during 5 days), together with total occurrences over month. This allows to understand if applied tuning gives any result, also to distinguish new issues easier:


4. Previously Drill down screen for Slow Queries was displaying only number of issue occurrences. Now you are allowed to go even further and view the list of issues with SQL statements. Previously you could do this only from the first screen of the performance dashboard, now the same is enabled from drill down screens for your convenience:


5. Drill down screen for Large Fetches is enhanced in the same way as the one for Slow Queries. We can see recently logged issues, together with all logged issues over the last month:


6. Details for every issue occurrence can be viewed for each logged large fetch:


7. Logged Users graph was updated to display average number of users per hour, together with total number of users per day. This allows to understand better real workload during each day:
