The UN Language Programme

The United Nations Language Programme seeks to promote multilingualism within the Organization and to strengthen the language capabilities of its staff, in accordance with the mandates of the General Assembly resolutions A/RES/2480(XXIII), A/RES/43/224, and A/RES/50/11. Depending on the context, multilingualism may refer to the working languages of the Secretariat, the official languages of the United Nations, or other relevant combinations of languages.

For the Asia and the Pacific region, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), located in Bangkok, administers the United Nations Language Programme for personnel serving in various United Nations entities across the region.

Multilingualism constitutes a cornerstone of harmonious communication within the United Nations. It is essential for fostering dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding, ensuring the meaningful participation of all stakeholders, and contributing to greater transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness in the work of the Organization. The Programme supports the integration of multilingualism throughout the United Nations system, thereby advancing the Organization’s principles and strategic objectives.

The Programme provides staff members with a valuable opportunity to enhance their linguistic proficiency, contributing both to personal development and to the strengthening of professional capacity across the United Nations system. In this regard, ESCAP is pleased to announce the opening of registration for the first semester of the 2026 United Nations Language Programme, which will be delivered virtually in the six official languages of the United Nations—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish—as well as Thai.
