About the journal
Aims & Scope
The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Open (JOGSO) is a scholarly, peer-reviewed open access journal which, together with the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, serve as the official publications of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). JOGSO publishes original, peer-reviewed articles of interest to an international audience of researchers, clinicians, and trainees in the area of surgery and diseases of the digestive tract. Physicians in related fields will also find the content of JOGSO relevant and supportive of their practice.
Specifically, the aims and goals are to:
a. Advance GI surgical science and disseminate high quality research. Publish peer-reviewed, cutting-edge surgical research that enhances clinical practice and patient care in the field of gastrointestinal surgery and disease, from clinical conditions to minimally invasive techniques and complex oncologic procedures and transplantation.
b. Ensure open access. Ensure open access to the latest GI surgical and clinical advances for surgeons, clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide.
c. Enhance surgical education. Provide a platform for surgeons, trainees, and healthcare professionals to access the latest improvements, best practices, premier techniques and newly developed treatments.
d. Enhance patient outcomes and welfare. Support research with a direct impact on the improvement of surgical techniques, peri-operative care and survival.
e. Bridge the knowledge gap. Support access to surgical research, particularly in low-resource settings where easy availability of medical literature is limited.
f. Drive evidence-based practices. Encourage research that informs and provides clinical guidelines, surgical decision-making and policy development.
g. Keep rigorous standards of peer review. Ensure that all published content meets the highest scientific and ethical standards.
h. Support multidisciplinary research. Encourage collaboration between surgeons in the different fields of GI surgery (foregut, bariatric, HPB, colorectal, abdominal wall, emergencies), clinical gastroenterologists and endoscopists, engineers, anesthesiologists, educators, ethicists and other related fields.
i. Publish a wide range of content. Including original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, technical innovations, guidelines and expert opinions, including video and graphic materials.
j. Foster global world representation. Feature research from diverse geographic, social and economic backgrounds to reflect global surgical challenges in the field of gastrointestinal diseases and solutions.
k. Encourage data transparency and reproducibility. Promote the sharing of research data, methods, and outcomes to strengthen scientific integrity.
l. Include digital innovations. Leverage multimedia, video content, and interactive features to enhance accessibility and educational value of the published materials.
m. Engage with both the GI clinical and surgical communities. An interactive knowledge-sharing environment can be created through appropriate use of social media.
