The EAT-Lancet Commission, a group of global food experts, has released its report on healthy, sustainable, and just food systems for the first time in six years. Dr. Kazuaki TSUCHIYA contributed as a co-author.

Dr. Kiyoshi TAKAHASHI (former Deputy Director) has been appointed as the new Director of the Social Systems Division.

Dr. Shinichiro ASAYAMA and Dr. Diego SILVA HERRAN of Social Systems Division, NIES, have been selected as lead authors for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report.

Dr. Asayama will contribute as a Lead Author for Chapter 2 "Vulnerabilities, impacts and risks" of WG2, and Dr. Silva Herran will contribute as a Lead Author for Chapter 9 "Energy systems" of WG3.

Dr. Toshihiko Masui, Director, is selected as a 2024 Highly Cited Researcher.

Clarivate Analytics has selected Dr. Masui as one of the Highly Cited Researchers for ranking in the top 1% most cited papers in the category of "Cross-Field". The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through publication of multiple highly-cited papers during the last decade.

LCCN Promotion Association will be launched soon. Dr. Minoru FUJII serves as Executive Director at this new initiative.

This initiative will further drive the advancement of LCCN (Life Cycle Carbon Neutral), a concept that goes beyond the traditional 3Rs by utilizing the heat generated from incinerating non-recyclable waste to supply steam to manufacturing plants and by producing plastics from captured CO2, all in the pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality.

The article discusses why public input for CAT is crucial in terms of citizen autonomy, inclusiveness, and a plurality of perspectives on climate-policy issues.

A new method for climate risk assessment has been developed that improves decision-making for climate change adaptation under uncertainty. A paper co-authored by Deputy Director Dr. Kiyoshi Takahashi was introduced on the website of the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Dr. Diego Silva Herran, Senior Researcher, received the Oral Presentation Award (Area 1: Policy and Integrated Concept) at the Grand Renewable Energy 2022 International Conference.

The Meeting Report of Forum on Scenarios for Climate and Societal Futures (Scenarios Forum 2022), held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria in June 2022, has been published. Dr. Kiyoshi Takahashi, Deputy Director of Social Systems Division, contributed to the Report as a co-author.

Eight climate experts from NIES including the two from the Social Division have been ranked as the most influential in their field in the new global Reuters Hot List, published in April 2021. Two Visiting Researchers of Social Division, Dr. Shinichiro Fujimori of Kyoto University and Dr.Tomoko Hasegawa of Ritsumeikan University also ranked in the list.

Dr. Yasufumi Mori, Principal Researcher, has received the Award for Science and Technology for 2021 by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

He and his team members were awarded in Public Understanding Promotion Category for their achievement in promoting SPO-GOMI, the most earth-friendly sport in the world. Gomi means garbage in Japanese, and SPO-GOMI is a completely new sport originated in Japan. It adds the essence of sports to garbage collection, and transforms the social service activities into sport competitions.
