「Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software (Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA))」
The Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software, commonly known as the Mobile Software Competition Act (the Act) (Act No. 58 of 2024), was approved and passed on June 12, 2024 and promulgated on June 19 in the same year.As smartphones are rapidly spreading and becoming the foundation of daily life and economic activities, the Act aims to develop a competitive environment in which innovation by various entities is activated through competition and consumers can select and enjoy various services created by innovation, while ensuring security, etc. with respect to specified software essential for the use of smartphones, such as mobile OSs, application stores, browsers and search engines. The JFTC imposes the designated providers certain obligations in order to develop such competitive environment.
This Act is scheduled to come into effect on December 18, 2025.
The provision related to the designation of providers subject to the Act took effect on December 19, 2024, in advance of full implementation.
