How is the IEC funded
Membership fees
IEC Members – one per country – each pay a membership fee which is calculated based on economic capacity and electricity consumption. Affiliate countries participate without the financial burden of membership via the IEC Affiliate Country Programme.
Sales of publications
Sales of IEC publications are another important component of IEC funding and account for nearly half of IEC income. IEC publications are sold via the IEC webstore; directly via IEC Members, or via appointed sales outlets.
Income from certification activities
The four IEC Conformity Assessment Systems directly contribute to IEC administrative costs.
Standards development is expensive
Stakeholders who participate via the IEC National Committees (IEC Members) invest an estimated USD 2 billion each year towards expert participation in IEC work. This comes on top of the costs for editing, publishing and disseminating the standards.
