The Sudanese-Egyptian Relations Amidst Shifting Regional Dynamics in the Middle East(2018_2_40_008)

概要

We examine the impact of geopolitical shifts on Sudan-Egypt relations in an increasingly fragmented regional order in the Middle East. These two countries have survived state collapse but increasing tension between them poses a risk to their political stability and represents a new level of conflict that may create a threat to regional stability. Our assessment of Sudan-Egypt relations focuses on three sources of conflicts: (1) the Egyptian-Sudanese stances on the Gulf crisis between Qatar and its Gulf neighbors on the one hand, and Saudi-Iranian rivalry in the region on the other; (2)the different Egyptian-Sudanese positions vis-a-vis the Muslim Brotherhood movement and opposition groups fighting their respective governments in Sudan and Egypt as well as their support for rival factions in Libya; (3)and the conflict over the Hala’ib and Shalateen triangle, the water politics in the Nile Basin, and the rising tension between Sudan and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
