Previous research

Democratic political institutions such as elections, parliaments, and political parties are often part of authoritarian (non-democratic, despotic) regimes. Although the existence of such political institutions seems to lead to increased competition, which is an important requirement for democracy, previous studies have suggested that they lead instead to the survival of the authoritarian regime. Therefore, I have focused on how elections affect the survival and democratization of such regime.

Current research projects

I am conducting research on the effects of elections on authoritarian regimes when opposition parties and dissident groups challenge the incumbent government. I examine mass protests and cooperation among opposition parties, with a particular focus on Malaysia under the National Front regime.
