Survival Strategies of Ethiopian Urban Residents Under Hyperinflation

Outline

Ethiopia has suffered from severe inflation for many years, but to make matters worse, it defaulted on its debt in December 2023. The sovereign default forced the Ethiopian government to accept various economic reform requests from the IMF, including the introduction of a floating exchange rate system in August 2024. The value of the local currency, the birr, has fallen sharply, and the people are expected to face even greater inflation than before. Under these circumstances, we aim to elucidate Ethiopia's urban residents' survival strategies. This research project follows the "Survival Strategies and Dietary Changes for Ethiopian Urban Residents" project in FY2023〜24. It will focus on the changes before and after introducing the floating exchange rate system.
