Sri Lanka; Departure from Traditional Two Party System

Outline

The economic crisis and anti-government protests of 2022 triggered a change of government in Sri Lanka. In the presidential election in September 2024, Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the small left-wing party NPP won the support of voters who wanted to break away from politics riddled with fraud and corruption. This result marks a major turning point in Sri Lankan political history and is expected to have a major impact on future politics and the economy. This study details and records the background, history, and results of this series of events.
