The Committee administering the Mechanism for Promoting Implementation and Compliance with the Basel Convention is a subsidiary body of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention that was established in 2002 under Article 15, paragraph 5 (e) of the Convention.. Its objective is to assist Parties to comply with their obligations under the Convention and to facilitate, promote, monitor and aim to secure the implementation of and compliance with the obligations under the Convention.
The Committee has a double mandate:
The Conference of the Parties, as the supreme body of the Convention, elects the fifteen members of the Committee and adopts decisions of relevance to the Committee, for instance the work programme of the Committee. The Committee, in turn, reports to the Conference of the Parties on the implementation of its work programme.
