BrightLoopTM Chemical Looping

As the global energy transition unfolds—shaped by infrastructure challenges, supply chain constraints and shifting policy priorities—flexible and scalable technology is essential to meet today’s energy goals and adapt to tomorrow’s demands.

Our BrightLoopTM chemical looping technology is designed to deliver that flexibility. It produces steam , hydrogen or syngas (a precursor for specialty chemicals and fuels) to support a wide range of applications across energy, industrial and agricultural sectors.

At the heart of BrightLoop is a breakthrough chemical looping process that converts diverse feedstocks into usable energy. This process leverages our proprietary TranspO2rtTM particles—iron-oxide oxygen carriers that enable conversion without combustion. The result: greater efficiency, improved reliability and inherent carbon separation.

BrightLoop supports energy diversity, energy independence and long-term sustainability across industries that include power generation, manufacturing, petrochemical and data center infrastructure.

Technology Overview

Scalability

BrightLoop projects are designed as standardized systems that can process a wide variety of feedstocks and operate effectively at different scales:

  • Small-scale for industrial or microgrid applications
  • Medium-scale for larger industrial operations or localized grid support
  • Large-scale for centralized infrastructure, including mega projects and full power grid integration

This scalable approach allows BrightLoop technology to meet diverse energy and production demands, from targeted local solutions to expansive national deployments.

Applications with Various Outputs

The flexibility and scalability of B&W's BrightLoop technology, both in terms of usable feedstock and product outputs, provides for a wide range of industry applications. While hydrogen production is certainly considered a key component of the energy transition, other configurations and functions of BrightLoop chemical looping are available to meet low-carbon initiatives. Examples include:

  • Low-carbon hydrogen production as an alternative to steam methane reforming
  • Net-negative energy production utilizing biomass
  • Clean coal power production
  • Waste byproduct utilization
