Connect your Chromebook to a monitor

You can connect your Chromebook to a monitor or TV with an HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, or USB-C port.

Show your Chromebook screen on your monitor

  1. At the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  2. Under "Device," select Displays.
  3. Select Mirror Built-in Display.
    • This option will appear when your monitor is connected.

Tip: To view your Chromebook screen only on your monitor, press and hold Decrease brightness.

Adjust your screens

  1. At the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  2. Under "Device," select Displays.
  3. To adjust your Chromebook screen, select Built-in Display. To adjust your monitor screen, select the name of the monitor.
    • Make items on your screen, including text, smaller or larger: Under "Display and text size," choose an option.
    • Rotate the screen: Under "Orientation," choose an option.

Tips:

  • To quickly move windows or apps from one screen to another, on your keyboard, press Search + Alt + m or Launcher + Alt + m.
  • Under your monitor tab, you can also:
    • Change screen sharpness: Under "Resolution," choose an option.
    • Change frequency of screen updates: Choose a higher refresh rate to refresh content on the screen faster.

Use an adapter to connect your Chromebook to a monitor

Sometimes you need an adapter cable to connect your Chromebook to a monitor. To learn what type of cable you need, check the instructions included with your Chromebook.

  1. Find the display output and input ports on your Chromebook. (If you’re not sure which ports to use, check the instructions included with your Chromebook.)
  2. Use these two ports to find the correct adapter (ex. DisplayPort to HDMI).
  3. Plug the adapter into the monitor, then into your Chromebook.

Use an HDR display or monitor

Some Chromebooks have high dynamic range (HDR) displays or support HDR through HDR-capable external monitors. If your Chromebook or external monitor doesn't support HDR, videos will play in standard dynamic range (SDR).

Use a docking station

Based on the Chromebook, you can connect up to 1-3 external monitors. Find "Works With Chromebook" certified docking stations.

Calibrate an external touchscreen

You can calibrate your external touchscreen display to correct its boundaries if it’s misaligned.

  1. At the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  2. Under "Device," select Display.
  3. Select your external touchscreen.
    • If there’s no external touchscreen, it isn’t connected to your Chromebook.
  4. Select Calibrate touchscreen.
  5. To calibrate, on your external touchscreen, select the circles marked Tap here.

Tip: If you start the calibration tool on a non-touchscreen display, calibration has no effect. To exit the tool, press Esc.

Troubleshoot connection issues

If you use a USB-C cable to connect your Chromebook to a monitor or docking station, the cable’s speed must be fast enough to support the connection. If you try to connect with a USB-C cable and the monitor doesn't respond, or you receive a "Cable may not support displays" message, try these steps.
