Environmental Monitoring for the Port of Hamburg

Air quality is an important factor for human quality of life. As a result, many governments are creating guidelines concerning emissions. To achieve better air quality, governments, industry and infrastructure providers have to work together to implement effective pollution management programs.

A core requirement for these programs is the effective assessment of the geographical distribution of emissions and their sources. This allows environmental experts to determine the best policies and most effective locations for emission mitigating infrastructure.

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), responsible for managing the ports infrastructure and the 10,000 ships arriving there each year, is one of the stakeholders faced with these challenges. Understanding the main emission sources in the area of the port is a key component of the port’s environmental projects and important for further improvements.

In cooperation with the Hamburg Port Authority and SAP, we are developing an application to analyze and visualize the influence of different sources of emissions in the harbors area and its surroundings.

Features

Our application will allow environmental experts to quickly and efficiently evaluate the harbor’s environmental status in the past, present and future. For this, it gathers data from a wide variety of different sources: ship positions, weather, congestion, traffic, and train movements. All this information is then analyzed, combined and meaningfully visualized. As all information is stored in a database, historical data can be seamlessly integrated and visualized. Ultimately, the air quality of any location at any time can be displayed and analyzed.

Currently used applications often only model one aspect of the environment, while our application models water vessels, ground vehicles, and more. Our application is intuitive to use and gathers necessary data automatically. Using the unique features of SAP HANA allows us to quickly aggregate the necessary data to calculate the models for any given timeframe.

Literature

"A Course in In-Memory Data Management" by Prof. Dr. h.c. Hasso Plattner. This book is the culmination of six years work of in-memory research. As such, it provides the technical foundation for combined transactional and analytical workloads inside one single database as well as examples of new applications that are now possible given the availability of the new technology. The book is available at Springer.
