Basic info

Application name: paperless
Application repo link: https://github.com/the-paperless-project/paperless
Application home link:
Application description: Scan, index, and archive all of your paper documents

Qualifications

There are a ton of great Python projects out there, but what makes an
application "AwesomeTM"? Please check that all of the following criteria apply:

  • Free software with an online source repository.
  • Using Python for a considerable part of their functionality.
  • Well-known, or at least prominently used in an identifiable niche.
  • Maintained or otherwise demonstrably still functional on relevant platforms.
  • An application, not a library or framework.

Note that installability via pip/PyPI and a developer-audience focus
may warrant a higher standard for inclusion, in keeping with the
spirit of the list:

Additional notability info

Paperless helps automating archival of actual paper documents. It supports receiving documents via email (among others) so it integrates very well with scanners which can send scanned documents over the network. It runs OCR on the files, search titles, dates, support tags, and encrypts the file for secure storage. Great for personal usage, for storing sensitive documents. Desktop and CLI interfaces are developed by the community.

Mentioning @danielquinn, the original author of the project.
