Science has proven that it is almost impossible to get rid of a habit. So in order to remove a bad habit, the best way is to replace it by a good habit. And building good habits takes about 3 months (90 repetitions). Knowing this, you can start replacing your habits with different one and know that it gets easier after 3 months. For example you could replace your glass of wine during prep with a glass of water. I got rid of sucking my thumb after close to 35 years by replacing that habit with moisturising my hands. I no longer moisturise them, but I got rid of it by replacing the habit with a different habit. So, try to think out of the box when looking for a replacement habit, for some it will be easier to come up with a replacement than for others. There are also apps on the phone that help with creating good habits and tracking new good habits. I don't use them and you don't need them, but possibly they could help. ... View more
@hazard6We don't know, as we don't have the medical background. I am going to apologise upfront in case I am going to sound blunt (I am Dutch and we can be direct at times). However, it does not really matter what caused it. At the end of the day you have the 20° S curve scoliosis (sorry to hear!). It is something that is going to be there whether you caused, worsened it or neither of these. The only thing knowing it would do, is that you would feel worse about yourself in case your concerns are true and there is really no need for that. I would like to suggest to bring this up with your counseler if you still see one for your anxiety and psychosis or make an appointment if this keeps bugging you so much. I am pretty sure they can talk this over with you and help you towards accepting the situation. I hope you feel better soon. ... View more
@kindoflazyI think it is great that you try another option before considering surgery. However, 800 calories is so low, that I would advice seeing a doctor while you do this. As you pointed out, when doing the surgery you would also be on a very low calorie intake after that, but you would be supervised by doctors. I don't have enough expertise to inform you properly, but don't take unnecessary risks. Please be aware that you won't be done with just a diet. You will have to make changes for the rest of your life and while this diet might be the approach for the short run, you will also have to look ahead and plan for the long run at some point. Dietitians should be able to help with that. We are a creature of habbit and food can be our addiction, so try to set yourself up for success and get all the help that you can get. ... View more

Did you drink plenty? It is always important to drink plenty, but specially after yoga I find. Possibly there was already something in your body and you would have felt that way anyways or the yoga class might have triggered it. It will be easier to tell if it was really the yoga class or not after a few classes. One data point is hard to draw conclusions from. ... View more
@pinkjunee Not the answer you want to hear, but the scale will tell. Log what you are doing for a few weeks (both food and calories burned) from that starting point you figured out and see what impact it has on your weight. Then adjust if needed. After the adjustment log again for a few weeks and see what the scale says then. Keep checking with the scale until you find what works for you. ... View more

Yoga can help with weight loss, but in itself it is not going to make you lose weight. Typically it is easier to battle that in the kitchen and/or with cardio. I do yoga 3 to 4 times a week and love it, but I would not say I can eat a lot more because of it. Depending on how much I did it might be an extra 100 calories for the day, but more often it is below that. But as @Dominique already pointed out, there are some extra benefits from yoga that have an impact on weight loss: reduced stress and improved sleep are the two major ones. It is good to do some restraint training and I put yoga in that category using your body weight instead of weights. ... View more
Voted, however I am doubtful we will get it. Therefore a suggestion that can help out with this. You can set up myfitnesspall to sync with FitBit. I believe myfitnesspall has a Dutch database (not currently using it myself). Another, but cumbersome, way of doing it is by creating custom foods, but this takes a lot of effort. If you eat very similar from day to day it is worth the effort though. ... View more

What @GershonSurge described is so true, that it is hard to eat differently from a group while trying to fit in. I am going through this with my family as I want to cut out dairy. I don't see them often, so 95% of the time it is no issue. I notice around them I still eat dairy with all my issues popping back up. I am gonna try to push a bit harder, but thanks for describing that so I understand what is going on. ... View more
With salads you might be eating hidden calories in the dressing. Just because it is a salad, it does not automatically mean it is low in calories. There can be some ingredients that are high in calories (e.g. olives and nuts). For weight loss eating healthy alone will not be enough if you are still eating too many calories. ... View more

What is your long term plan? What are you going to do after you reach your goal weight to maintain it? I am sorry if I am wrong, but it sounds to me that you think about this as a diet instead of a long term (rest of your life) lifestyle change. You lost it fast the first time around doing a crash diet and then gained some again. If you are not careful, you might end up in this cycle of losing and gaining and you will become very frustrated. I understand you want to lose this weight fast now, but maybe change your focus from losing weight fast now to creating a new healthy lifestyle. Which most likely means losing weight at a much slower rate that works better for your current size. Try to set yourself up for success in the long run, instead of getting into this cycle of losing and gaining. Create healthy habits that you can maintain instead of just focusing on short term weight, scales and calories. ... View more

I have the same. This morning I travelled to work by bike and recorded the ride and it had 6 minutes in cardio heart rate zone. But when I go to the heart tile, it shows 2 minutes in cardio heart rate zone for the entire day. I believe this is due to the way the heart rate is sampled differently for both the data sets. Instead of sampling it every second as is done for the graph when you track an exercise, the data is sampled less densely for the full day graph. This can reflect in different totals when you move through heart rate zones rather quickly. The data will be more similar when you stay in zones for a longer period before switching to a different one. Notice how during your hike you drop to cardio often. ... View more
@actresskat wrote: Thank you for your suggestion to incorporate an active hour on rest days to increase my BMR (rather than cut an additional 500 calories in order to lose weight). I appreciate your advice. You cannot increase your BMR. Your BMR is the amount of calories you burn doing totally nothing (this is the definition, by being active those are calories burned on top of you BMR). The 1200 calories a day guideline is not for everyone. It can be too low for some people and too high for others. The idea is to not eat below your BMR (atleast for an extended amount of time) as that can have an impact on your metabolism. But if your BMR is lower than 1200, you don't have to eat more than your BMR, specially on days you are not active. You can use an online calories calculator to estimate what your BMR is. On days you are totally not active at all and you eat as much as your BMR you should not gain nor lose. In order to lose you could simply not eat back (all) the calories you burn on the days that you are active. Losing weight on days you are doing nothing at all is just not something you should aim for, specially not when you have plenty of active days in a week. Just don't gain on those days. ... View more

I think the post of @Odyssey13 is spot on with trying to step back and have someone else help her. Otherwise this can become a discussion that could damage your relationship while you try to help her. ... View more

Also try to be creative with how you get your steps at work. When you have to use the toilet, use one in a different wing or on a different floor. Same for printing documents. @GettingfitinSC Eating vegetarian and low carbs does not equal low calories per se. Cheese and nuts for example are vegetarian, but they are high in calories. So the best solution is to log what you eat. Also what you eat today will have very little impact on your weight tomorrow. I typically notice a change in weight in 2 days after eating way more than I usually do or cutting back again. But sounds like you are taking some good steps towards a healthier life nonetheless. ... Just because a sport/exerecise does not give you steps, it does not mean it is not good for your health. By that logic biking would not be a good exercise and I think we can all agree that biking is a healthy exercise. Yoga is not cardio though. I consider it as strength training myself. Yoga helps mostly with strength, flexibility and balance. Those are the three main things you practice when doing poses. However, it has more benefits beyond those three (similar to other sports making you feel happy and not only improve your heart). It helps with releasing tenstion as you tense and relax your muscles. It is one of the greatest tools to counter anxiety (I can say this from experience). It helps with good posture. It helps with good lymph health and hormone balance. It helps with sleeping well. I could go on for a bit 😉 . There are different types of yoga. The base of yoga is hatha yoga and all other yoga forms are derived from hatha yoga. Yin yoga as described by the poster above me is a different form for example, where you hold certain poses for an extended time and try to relax as much as possible. But there are also yoga forms that aim to get your blood flowing and your heart pumping (vinyasa). There are many more types of yoga out there. ... View more

Yes you are on the right track for now. Our stomache gets used to the amount of food we give it daily. When we change that it will take a few weeks before it is used to this new amount. It should get a bit easier after the first week I think. For now do what you are doing and check your progress in 4 weeks. You will notice your weight might sometimes go a bit up in the day to day measurements, but if you are on the right track this is mostly due to water retention. For women the cycle has an impact on water retention too. Therefore, I would suggest to go at it for 4 weeks, then check your progress and adjust where needed. If you keep evaluating your progress every 4 weeks and adjust where needed, you will find what is right for you. ... View more

Low calories only has an impact on how much you can eat, not on what you can eat. By low carb people typically mean no processed carbs like pasta, rice, bread, cookies etc.. You might actually want to increase the amount of vegetables you are eating while making those changes to feel more full. How big is the calorie deficit you are planning? ... View more

Well, last time holiday was pretty easy as it was with a yoga group and they are generally more health orientated. But before that in a hotel I tried to get as close to the breakfast as I have at home. Ofcourse I gained some and knowing it is only temporary I do not mind too much as I know it will be back in control when I get home. But you could consider it a fun challenge to try to get as close to your normal routine as possible. Now with some meals that will be easier than others (hello dinnertime) and with activity most likely not possible at all, but it might make you more mindful and think about taking that snack instead of mindlessly eating it. I find overeating on conferences so easy to do, but also so annoying as I will get so sleepy. ... View more
Just by starting work out mode it does not automatically log active minutes if you do not qualify for them (your heart rate needs to be above a certain treshold for 10 minutes). For example, when I bike to work I start work out mode to track my bike ride. Depending on if I had to wait for a red light, I might not get active minutes for the ride, even though it takes me 15 minutes to complete. As the wait for the red light makes my heart rate drop below the treshold and I end up biking two parts which are each below 10 minutes. So how long were you active in one go? If you were active (read heart rate high enough) for longer than 10 minutes in one go, then active minutes should be added. The tracker will add active minutes based on heart rate whether it is in work out mode or not. When I use auto-detect and walk for long enough it will automatically add active minutes. You can add extra active minutes by adding exercises manually via the app or certain apps will add them like FitStar. ... View more

The 700-800 calories deficit is according to FitBit. FitBit can only estimate this deficit. Every person is different, so our calories burned vary slightly. There is also differences reported in the calories burned between trackers (the one with a heart rate monitor tend to overestimate the amount of calories burned). And then not every calorie eaten is the same, for example 100 calories of vegetables will have a different impact compared to 100 calories of sugar. I think you are doing great losing at a constant pace. If you want to increase the pace, you might want to increase the calories deficit reported by FitBit until you start losing at a somewhat higher pace. But to me the pace you are losing at is not as important as doing it constantly at a level you can sustain. ... View more
