I am putting my name forward for the CheckUser rights on Commons. I first joined Wikimedia projects in August 2019. I have been an administrator on Commons since May and I had previously served as an administrator on the Uyghur Wikipedia from October 2022 to April 2023.
While a Commons admin, I have become active in investigating abusive sockpuppetry from a behavioral perspective, filing related checkuser requests, and blocking abusive sockpuppets. As a Checkuser, I would investigate abusive sockpuppetry from a technical perspective, actively evaluate requests made by other users at Commons:Requests for checkuser, and take appropriate administrative actions thusly.
I understand that this role requires a high amount of trust because of the nature of the sensitive information involved. I am committed to ensuring that all requests are evaluated and handled with the proper care and sensitivity that they deserve. In my career, I am a professional who performs technical anti-fraud and anti-abuse work, and I am familiar with the obligations to privacy that access to non-public user information demands. In the Wikimedia sphere, I have had access to users' IP address information as a Steward Clerk, where I have undertaken work pertaining to proxy usage and related blocks. In terms of account security, my account has two-factor authentication enabled. I have also signed both the ANPDP and the VRT Confidentiality agreement.
Thank you for your time and consideration. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:59, 3 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]

[edit ]- Oppose - Has been an admin a mere 4 months (!!!). I do not consider this sufficient time to have become a "highly-trusted administrato[r]" (COM:CU); this bizarre haste suggests a failure to understand or to appreciate the genuine experience the role requires and does not reflect well on judgment. - Oppose Without question a useful and trusted admin however I think Elcobbola makes a valid point on the length of time served as an admin. Later on maybe. Herby talk thyme 14:30, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]

- Oppose per above. 1989 (talk) 17:13, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]
- Oppose Too premature to request a CU hat. I have no issues with the user's ability and knowledge, and would be happy to support the next time. ─ The Aafī (talk )
- Neutral 4 months of adminship is quite soon for me. But I wouldn't be disappointed if this request succeeded--I think you would make a good CheckUser, if not now, later. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:20, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]
- I withdraw my request. The opposition based on (lack of) administrative tenure is utterly reasonable, and I see no need to let this go the full 14 days. Perhaps in a year or two, but I agree that this request was made too hastily relative to my tenure as an admin. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:52, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]

[edit ]- As you said you have undertaken work as a steward clerk, how many such issues have you processed, let's say in the last 3 months? --Krd 04:59, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]
- That's a good question. I don't have an exact count, but if my memory serves me right the number would be in the lower triple digit range. I know that there are some Stewards who keep stats on this, and I can try to get a more specific count from them if you'd like. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 07:24, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]
- I think we don't need the exact number, but perhaps an assessment if activity is around average or at any end of the scale.
- At the two neighboring applications we have one candidate who isn't very active as Commons admin, while the other applied for another time consuming task just before applying for CU. I think qualified stewards clerks are diffcult to find, and there appear to be only five of them. Do you think you will handle both tasks without letting one of it fall behind? - I think I have enough time to do both if my workload as a Steward Clerk remains about the same as it is now. Admittedly, I don't expect it to remain the same—we've already gotten through ~90% of the backlog at this point, and reducing that backlog has been the majority of my work as a clerk, so I do expect that workload will drop off a bit in ~1 month. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:36, 4 September 2023 (UTC) [reply ]
