Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
SIDS Day 2008 held at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)
On the 12 May 2008, as part of its review cycle, the CSD gave consideration to the implementation of the BPoA and the MSI in respect of this cycle's thematic issues of land, agriculture, rural development, drought, desertification and Africa. In an effort to demonstrate the rich potential and the range of products from agriculture and rural enterprise in SIDS, an Agro-Industry Exhibition was organized and launched. The SIDS Day also featured a number of partnership and side-events.
High-level Roundtable on International Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Caribbean SIDS (25-27 Mar 2008)
More than 140 representatives of the Government of sixteen SIDS in the Caribbean, the Government of Iceland, regional intergovernmental organizations, UN DESA and other UN programmes and agencies, as well as business leaders met for a High-level Roundtable on International Cooperation for Sustainable Development of Caribbean SIDS.
Experts Group Meeting on
Mainstreaming and Monitoring the Mauritius
Strategy of Implementation
(New York, 27-28 April 2007)
The SIDS Unit convened an Expert Group Meeting to begin consideration of a framework for monitoring progress towards the mainstreaming of the Mauritius Strategy of Implementation (MSI) within the United Nations system, and for more effective monitoring of SIDS development plans, integrating the Mauritius strategy as an essential element in SIDS national and regional development processes. SIDS Plenary, IPM (26 February 2007), United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
The first day of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 15th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development featured a SIDS Plenary. Three panelists led interactive discussions to outline innovative policy options to support the sustainable development of SIDS. Viable solutions for reducing SIDS’ vulnerability to climate change and air pollution as well as for strengthening their industrial development and access to energy for sustainable development were highlighted. SIDS Day (8 May 2006) held at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) devoted one day during its review sessions to consider the implementation of BPoA, focusing on the respective year's thematic cluster, as well as on any new developments regarding the sustainable development efforts of SIDS. The SIDS Day was held 8 May 2006 during this year's 14th session of the CSD , and therefore focused on energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution/atmosphere, and climate change.
2005 Regional and inter-regional meetings of the SIDS
In 2005, as a follow-up on the
implementation of the Mauritius Strategy,
the United Nations Department of Economic
and Social Affairs convened regional and
inter-regional meetings of the SIDS in
partnership with relevant regional
organizations and stakeholders. The main
objective of the consultations was to
identify specific programmes and projects to
give effect to the undertakings set out in
the
Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI).
The regional meetings were held in St.
Kitts & Nevis (5-7 October), Samoa (17-19
October) and Seychelles (26-28 October). The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy hosted
the inter-regional meeting which took place
in Rome (15-16 November). Additionally, on
18 and 23 November, the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) held special meetings on
food security and sustainable development in
Small Island Developing States. All final
