b. 8th January 1945, United Kingdom

d. 11th September 2025, United Kingdom

The British disc jockey and Record Company owner, Chris Hill, has died. Chris was 80.

Speaking from my own perspective, I first came across Chris, personally, at the club Lacy Lady in Ilford (Friday nights) during the mid Seventies. He was a larger than life character

I became aware of the man through the media, as his 'outspoken' reputation preceded him.

I lived in the South Western parts of London, seldom heading East, so I got to know Chris gradually.

He was a deejay at the Goldmine night club in Canvey Island U.K. Chris became one of the leading voices in the 'Soul Mafia' (a group of DJs which included Greg Edwards, DJ Froggy, Jeff Young and Robbie Vincent, in London and the South East of England).

Being the owner of the Ensign Records imprint, he influenced the British 'Brit Funk' music scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In the early 2000's, Blues and Soul scribe, Dave Godin died. Chris was a good friend of Dave's and he kindly offered to drive me up to Dave's funeral.

Chris was full of stories on the journey, at one point telling me that I was a boring 'very rude word'. He was a very funny man. I had to remind him of just why we were going, where we were going! :)).

We had a meal afterwards with Dave's old partner, Alf, who was also very charming.

When Chris drove me back to London, I said I would get a train home from North London. He dropped me off and, later, called me when I got home, like a father, to see if I had arrived O.K. Separately to his reputation for his use of rude words, I found him to be a very considerate man.

We spoke a few times following the trip.

I'll miss him being around, all told.

The American musician, songwriter, singer and record producer (who co-founded the Beach Boys), Brian Wilson, has died. Brian was 82.

Not many musicians could cross the corridor from the room of one genre to another, and be met with little or no resistance. Brian was one such artist. Loved by people of all colours and creeds. Much respect to Bill Buckley and Pat Ntojea, who were/are both huge fans.
