The C1s were standard Maritime
Commission cargo ships. They were the least ambitious of the
non-emergency standard types, with limited speed that made them mostly
unsuitable as Navy auxiliaries. However, a few C1-Bs were converted to hospital ships.
The C1-M-AV1 subtype was somewhat smaller, had less powerful diesel
machinery yielding less than 12 knots speed, and was intended for use
as coastal shipping. They were based on a Baltic Coaster design and
were intended for use within theater for movement between staging areas
and forward positions. 65 ships of this type were allocated to the Navy
as Alamosa-class
cargo ships.
The ships cost about 2ドル.1 million apiece. Production was phased out by 1944 in favor of Liberty Ships.
