Malmsey

MALMSEY, a strong sweet wine, originally made at Monemvasia, Napoli di Malvasia, in the Morea, Greece.

The name of the place was corrupted in Medieval Latin into malmasia, whence the English form of the word. The corruption malvasia gives the Old French malvesie, from which comes the alternative English form "malvoisie."

The wine is now made not only in Greece but also in Spain, Madeira and the Azores.
