Ionospheric Group of IAASARS/NOA

The Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) is one of the three research Institutes of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which was the first research Institution of Greece founded in 1842.

The Ionospheric Group of IAASARS works systematically on making available data and products for the monitoring, specification, forecasting and long term prediction of the ionospheric conditions over Europe to academic and operational users.

The main activities of the Ionospheric Group focus around the performance of systematic ionospheric monitoring and the development of ionospheric and trans-ionospheric models for the bottomside and topside ionosphere, ingesting ground and space data from the near-Earth space. Today, the Ionospheric Group through its research facilities and systematic funding from the European Commission, the European Space Agency, and other national and international organizations, develops scientific products able to support HF communication systems, satellites orbiting at LEO and MEO heights and systems relying on transionospheric propagation, at any location of the Earth’s upper atmosphere up to the plasmapause, and protect these systems from ionospheric disturbances and irregularities triggered by space weather and lower atmosphere perturbations.
