**Please note that the abc痴 in the Fiddler痴 Companion work fine in most abc conversion programs. For example, I use abc2win and abcNavigator 2 with no problems whatsoever with direct cut-and-pasting. However, due to an anomaly of the html, pasting the abc痴 into the concertina.net converter results in double-spacing. For concertina.net痴 conversion program to work you must remove the spaces between all the lines of abc notation after pasting, so that they are single-spaced, with no intervening blank lines. TINK-A-TINK . English, Schottsiche. G Major (Ashman, Callaghan, Kennedy, Raven, Sharp, Trim): A Major (Kerr). Standard tuning. ABC (Kennedy, Raven): AAB (Kerr): AABB (Ashman, Trim): ABAC (Sharp). This very popular melody first appeared as the vehicle for a duet in the 1798 opera Blue Beard, or Female Curiosity by Michael Kelly, first performed at the Drury Lane theatre. It was sung by Mrs. (Maria Theresa) Bland and Mr. John Bannister Jr. According to Bannistger痴 memoirs (John Adolphus, Memoirs of John Bannister, Comedian, 1839), the melody was rumoured to have been Russian originally; 適elly never concealed or denied it? (pg. 16). Editor Ashman says his version is very similar to another dotted variation found in the John Clare manuscript (Helpstone, Northants, 1820), and thinks "both are nicer than the undotted tune found in the Hardy MS." 典ink-a-Tink? appears in numerous other musicians? manuscripts from the period, including John Moore (where it appears simply as 泥ance?), the Rev. Robert Harrison (Brampton, Cumbria, 1820), William Mittell (New Romney, Kent, 1799), the Browne family manuscripts (Troutbeck, Cumbria), the John Rook manuscript (Warerton, 1840), William Calvert (Leyburn, North Yorkshire, 1812), James Winder (Wyresdale, Lancashire, 1835), the Welch family manuscripts (Bosham, Sussex), the Tiller manuscript, James Haslingden (Midlands?, 1827), and Ann Winnington (England & New York, 1815). In America, 典ink a Tink? was included in Thomas Cushing痴 copybook (1805-1813) and Daniel Henry Huntington痴 copybook (Onondoga, New York, 1817).

The tune was learned by Braxton County, West Virginia, musician Bob Wine, father of fiddler Melvin Wine, who heard mulatto fiddler Jilly Grace play it but once. According to Gerry Milnes (1999) the elder Wine 田ould not even bribe Grace to play the tune a second time, but he managed to learn it anyway.? TISHAMINGO . Old‑Time. The title appears in a list of traditional Ozark Mountain fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. There is a Tishomingo County in the state of Mississippi.

All counties have blues. I felt that Tishomingo County was blue

enough and ought to have one. I picked up notes from other

tunes and made one up of my own. It took some time, not all

Gary Stanton, in his article 鄭ll Counties Have Blues: County Blues as an Emergent Genre of Fiddle Tunes in Eastern Mississippi? (North Carolina Folklore Journal, vol. 28, no. 2, Nov. 1980), points out that while almost a third of the commercial releases of white Mississippi musicians in the 1920痴 and 1930痴 were blues or blues influenced, only two field recordings of white instrumental blues were made, 典ishomingo County Blues? and 鏑ost John.? The field recordings were assumed to have been of older, less commercial musicians. Stanton痴 thesis is that Mississippi fiddlers of that time period were split between older fiddlers whose repertoire reflected that of the turn of the century, and younger fiddlers who were influenced by mass media and popular trends, whose repertoire included the more modern forms of waltzes, blues and popular tunes.

Tom Rankin (1985) points out that the coarse part of the melody was borrowed almost directly from "Carroll County Blues #1? (there were three different Carroll County Blues recorded), although it was played in a different key. 典ishomingo? is called by Stanton a 双ne-chord? tune.

John Glen (Early Scots Melodies, 1900) finds the tune in the Atkinson manuscript of 1694, albeit under the title 典his Wife of Mine.? Bruce Olson cites LoganThe Pedlar痴 Pack (1869), wherein is the note that a broadside ballad of c. 1700 called 釘e Valiant Still? was to be sung to the tune of 典he old carle to daunton me.? The melody appears in James Oswald痴 Curious Collection of Scots Tunes for Violin, Bass Viol or German Flute (1740), dedicated to the Duke of Perth, and later in his Caledonian Pocket Companion (book 1, 1743). It also appears in William McGibbon痴 Second Collection of Scots Tunes (1746), and in Bremner痴 1762 reprint of McGibbon痴 collection.

The word 租aunton? (and its variant, 租anton?) is an archaic formulation meaning 租ismay? or 租iscourage?, which appears occasionally in older British folk manuscripts. One instance of it in folksong is in the ballad 典homas Rhymer? (Child 37, version C), in the verse (here Thomas has encountered the Fairie Queen):

In 1788 Robert Burns (1759-1796) composed a song by the title 典o Daunton Me,? printed in Thompson痴 Scots Musical Museum (1797), which begins:

TOBACA DAOR . Irish, Reel. Ireland, County Donegal. The piece is attributed to southwest Donegal fiddler John Mhosai (Mac Fhionnlaioch), born in the 1840's. Caoimhin Mac Aoidh (1994) relates that the title refers to a trip made by John on his white pony to a pub in Glencolumcille to purchase tobacco. The fiddler was sidetracked by a card game in which he lost all his money, but managed to return home having salvaged his plug of tobacco.

TOBACCO'S BUT AN INDIAN WEED . AKA - "Tobacco." English, Air (4/4 time). E Flat Major (Chappell): C Major (Scott). Standard tuning. One part. The air appears in Pills to Purge Melancholy (1699), but appears to Chappell (1859) to have been founded on a poem by George Wither called "Meditations on Tobacco" which appears in The Marrow of Complements of 1654. The song long retained its popularity however, eventually being published with the addition of an inferior second part by the Reverend Ralph Erskine, a Scot, in his "Gospel Sonnets" as "Smoking Spiritualized." In this form it survived well into the 19th century. Authorship was claimed by John Blockley (who set a great many of Tennyson's lyrics), nevertheless, the antiquity of the song is proven.

It was Sir Walter Raleigh who is credited with championing the habit of tobacco smoking in the Elizabethan court. Considered by the general population for some time afterward as disrespectable, even alien and sinister, by the late 16th and 17th centuries it had become ensconced in the fashionable classes, who immersed themselves deeply in the habit葉he height of fashion for many Dutch, English and French people. In fact, association of tobacco with desirable male qualities, such as health, power, freedom, intelligence, etc. began not with advertising campaigns but with the almost immediate public perception that tobacco was the affectation of the mercenary soldier, a man with excess money, a wandering carefree lifestyle, who was at one and the same time rugged and dandyish. By the 18th century the upper classes of England indulged themselves regularly and the phenomenon of smoking clubs arose.? These gentlemens? clubs were a popular venue for good conversation and convivial relaxation, with a glass of porter or punch and a fine, long-burning pipeful of tobacco.
