Nuclear power is an excellent energy source in terms of securing a stable supply and preventing global warming, and it is important to establish the nuclear fuel cycle and promote nuclear power generation as a core source of power.
However, the environment surrounding nuclear power is changing greatly, with the advancement of electricity deregulation, the introduction of new safety regulations for nuclear power, and the undermining of public trust due to repeated issues and scandals in recent years.
In order to fully display the characteristics of nuclear power under such circumstances, it is indispensable for utilities and organizations related to nuclear power to fulfill their individual roles, and furthermore, the entire Japanese nuclear power industry must make a full-scale effort to further enhance utilities' safety activities, make serious efforts to ensure safe and stable plant operation, gain public confidence, and revitalize the nuclear power industry.
The "Japan Nuclear Technology Institute" was thus established by consensus of the nuclear power industry as a new organization to support and lead the nuclear power industry.
The Japan Nuclear Technology Institute (JANTI) develops technical expertise and supports utilities in promoting safety activities, and aims to further enhance the safety of nuclear power. This contributes to the revitalization of the nuclear power industry, which is the common interest of its members.
JANTI was thus established as an organization that combines the collective effort of the nuclear power industry by consolidating and restructuring the functions of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry Nuclear Information Center, and the Nuclear Safety Network (NS Net), assuming operations, and providing functions such as developing consensus standards.
JANTI is also independent from nuclear operators and exercises a supervisory role from an objective, third-party standpoint.
Furthermore, with regards to the activities of the Institution, the transparency of management is enhanced through information disclosure and the review by of a board of councilors comprising external members.
