Missed this from a couple days ago, but nothing really new here :
Chicago will slow police hiring to roughly 50 recruits per month — and put no classes through the training academy again next summer — to generate the 91ドル million in "turnover" savings needed to help erase the city’s 1ドル.2 billion budget shortfall, police officials told City Council members Wednesday.
Two months ago, Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling vowed to resist any attempt to eliminate 984 police vacancies — even after Mayor Brandon Johnson ordered all of his department heads to cut 3% to 5% from their 2025 budgets.
Instead, Snelling said he would meet the cost-cutting mandate by holding open those 984 police positions, but budgeting less money for those vacancies he knew the city would not be able to fill.
So we're already short those 984 spots. Rahm cut 1,200+ spots from the budget a decade ago. Groot did similar numbers.
We've been sounding the alarm for years, pointing out that where we used to have eight or ten rapids up along with a second wagon and a traffic car, those haven't been seen on a regular basis for nearly twenty years now. Not to mention Chicago closed three entire Districts. So that "10,000" number is and has been a fantasy for a long time. Depending on what happens in New York City and knowing that CPD steals every NYPD idea (no matter how bad it it), we might even see a further drop.
This amused us though:
But Ryan Fitzsimons, deputy director for oversight coordination, said police hiring will be "staggered" throughout the year. "We will be pausing some of our recruit classes over the summer, which we did this year, to allow us to better allocate resources out into the field and also tamp down those overtime expenses," Fitzsimons said.
If police hiring needs to slow down, Snelling said the "best time for that to happen was during the summer." "We have less recruits in the academy during the summer. That’s when we have most of our [special] events. We have sworn officers working in the academy. Those people we could use now to go out to some of these events. It reduces overtime," the superintendent said.
"pausing...recruit classes"? Like hiring them and then what? Laying them off? Forcing them to work details? Because as readers know, the training process is six months long. Someone you hire in January isn't on the street until June. Moving forward:
- February hirees come out in July
- March hirees come out in August
- April hirees come out in September
That covers the summer months. So when does the "pause" occur?
May is also the first opportunity for FOP members to retire and many take advantage of it. You're shortages are going to peak right when hiring is "paused"?
And that calls this into question:
For years, the city has allocated 100ドル million for police overtime, only to blow through it — to the tune of 282ドル.8 million in 2023 and 238ドル million last year.
Johnson’s budget caps police overtime at 200ドル million and requires Council approval for spending that exceeds the cap.
We shall see.

Bottom line, if you are stuck in a district you hate or on a watch with bosses you hate, it will be a while before you can escape.
Get rid of narcotics , gang investigations , rub and tug , scale down on carjacking task force .

Are potential recruits even applying anymore not just to CPD but anywhere? My father retired from the job in 98. Growing up that’s all me and my brother wanted to do as he got on a suburban dept but we were encouraged daily for as long as we can remember and we wanted it. That was the general consensus back then coppers encouraged their kids to pick up the legacy and go after the job. Now I hear my colleagues every day expressing how they adamantly discourage their kids from ever being a copper which is unfortunate but understandable. Even my fireman cousin and his medic wife say they won’t under any circumstance let their daughters ever imagine getting on cfd . Unfortunate but understandable. That seems to be the trend everywhere. So even if they were putting classes through all year are there even enough recruits to sustain? Funny times we live in. Younger people under 30 are also not cut from the same cloth we all were they are softer than pigeon crap.

Get rid of district tac put them on beats , Keep 2 area prt teams per district , 2 06 cars a shift , boom beats manned .

I’d take a 50% paycut today to switch to CFD from CPD.
Days worked vs days off I would still come out on top with CFD. CPD offers great opportunities but only for the connected. Us beat pushers see it and therefore we only stick around for the paycheck. While giving the bare minimum required. This is the reality and life ain’t fair.
More troubling is 2000 plus guys who should be on the job paying into the pension fund.

Almost nobody wants their kid to be a cop these days, but then after they’ve busted their ass to send their kids to college (mostly useless) - their kid goes out into the world and can’t seem to find a decent job. 3-5 years post degree, their kid is applying for a police job. If smart, hopefully not CPD.
We have public schools at 10% capacity, is he gonna cut those next. Maybe only cut schools under 40% capacity.

I know someone who was supposed to start the academy in September but has since been pushed back to February. We’ll see if the February start date holds...
If you hire more police officers.....there are more bodies out there to deploy.....you cut overtime.

FYI; They disbanded the car jacking teams that were assigned to the 5 area detective divisions, the officers and supervisors that were assigned to these teams were never sent back to their unit of assignments. Most, if not all of them came from districts.
What do they have these officers doing in the detective division you ask, well they traded in their jeans and t-shirts for a dress shirt and tie, they are sitting around doing nothing!
Sometimes they might be answering phones but mostly seating around doing nothing trying to look like detectives.
Send them back to their districts where the bodies are badly needed.... Way too many officers assigned to the detective division, being taken care of and hiding out. I thought this was only a 90 day detail????? Poor use of manpower, but it doesn’t surprise me

When the bosses massively under-budget for O/T year after year, what do they expect? It's a butt-covering exercise to try keeping the City Council in the dark as to the O/T bill until it's too late to do anything. Time to raise the O/T budget to match reality, not some bean-counter (accounting) fantasyland.

old wheeler gunner here, agree 100%. worked Narco in the latem, 60's,early 70's. we had maybe 55 coppers,did a good job ,locking up the dealers. these hair gel,molly vest don't do half what we did,they do have better stories. we also wore sport coats, dress pants and shirts.
so,,,, wth less police,, less cps students and less criminals in county jail my property taxes should be going way, way down,,,right??

The department will leave 948 vacant police positions (9161) next year with very few promotions but will hire in excess of 100 civilian positions including top paying jobs (6 figures) like Attorneys, Project Managers, Assistant Director and a variety of other Directors (Deputy, Managing & Executive). The new way of "defund the police" in today’s society.

They rarely give a CFD exam it’s like every 8 years but they only hire 1200 over a 7-9yr time span. You need luck to be hired. Just luck. The medic side they can’t even fill a class of 20. Face it nobody wants these jobs anymore it isn’t the city we grew up in the Chicago we knew is long gone so is the culture people (folks) cut from our cloth hardly exist now. College age types are so delusional they don’t even know which gender they are they’re really wimpy types safe space needing types. They ain’t interested in rugged blue collar jobs at all. Which is why every union in the city is aching for apprentices. But keep sending your spawns to college. What a waste of time and your money.

Yes, it's like this for majority of the Chicagoland area. I currently work for a county jail in the collar counties and our jail deputies are always looking to apply for patrol and there opportunities are not necessarily limited. Anytime there's a police academy about to happen, you see every major department hiring on TheBlueLine.com. Also when I speak to P.O.s during the booking process, almost all of them are short in some fashion.
News flash....it’s a better solution to just pay the arc rather than an officer paying into with the 9%. A reduction in manpower is essential to reducing liabilities.
Kollege total waste of money! Have friends that are in trades plumbers,HVAC, electricians making over 100 per hour, so few doing the job they just "name their price" and people go with it! For example friend put in a new furnace for a man had his helper with 1 day job, profit was 1700 and it was a cash deal! Get your kids in a trade, no matter what happens with AI we still need skilled hands on people to actually do the work! Trades have literally thousands of open jobs, but then again some kids are so lazy they want to do nothing but stay on screens all day!
