Hi Sean,
Thanks for that – I know MIP and JC3IEDM from a previous project…not something I’d relish formally ontologising though !
PS – there are at least two JC3IEDM “ontologies” around – the ones I saw were just OWL representations of the data model though.
Cheers

depending what you want, the Multilateral Interoperability Programme http://www.mip-site.org/ has lots of general classifications useful for C4I. There is a general data model together with a long series of tables of domain values. The current XML version of the documentation is very easy to navigate if you know where you are going, but the older documents are easier to get to know the model. My guess is that if your are interested in medical information, any relevant "domains" are likely to be under Object_type but the level of detail is very limited - typically to only identifying something as being "medical" (medical personnel, medical consumable).

This mail has originated outside your organization,
either from an external partner or the Global Internet.
Keep this in mind if you answer this message.Ian,
You can get SNOMED-CT (Clinical terms) via the UMLS, by applying for a license(free for research, not sure about commercial) to the UMLS metathesaurus. SNOMED-CT is distributed by UMLS.
Go to: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/Snomed/snomed_main.html
The pointer to the UMLS is on the first part of that visible page.
There are several military knowledge hierarchies available on-line, but they are dispersed and I don’t know of any oriented toward medicine. The ‘symbolology’ standard MS2525b can be obtained at:
www.cs.cmu.edu/~softagents/papers/MILSTD_2525B-Common_WFX_Symbology-30Jan99.pdf.gz
This has some classifications of military equipment. There are several versions, including OWL, of the NATO messaging standard JC3IEDM (google “jc3iedm ontology”). Not sure if any of that would be useful to you.

Hi All,
As part of my search for standard ontologies and reference data that I can…er…”borrow”, SNOMED has come up as a candidate. The only “open” SNOMED stuff I can get my grubby mitts on is the data exchange file format.
I’m led to believe there is also a standard set of reference data (i.e. terms and relationships) to support SNOMED, but I don’t seem to be able to get hold of this. I can lots of references to SNOMED and OWL on the web, but they all seem to be in private hands. Can anyone point me at an open source for up-to-date SNOMED data ?
Does anyone know if the SNOMED reference data open source – i.e. can I steal it with impunity ?
Secondly, if anyone knows a good open source for military classifications (the sort of stuff you find on Janes, for example), I’d be really grateful for any pointers. Doesn’t have to be OWL or RDF or anything like that. The format can be anything really.
…those keen reasoners amongst you have probably twigged we’re working on a military medical project.
Cheers
