Doug mentioned? Doug's setup is what I did from the get-go.

The "whole house splitters" typically have screw terminals for wires to 
be attached to, and are designed to "fit" in the demark... i.e. 
weatherproof.
The "dongels" (micro-filters) expect RJ45s, and are expecting "inside" 
usage.
The main difference is apparently related to the quality (and extent) 
of your in-house wiring. With a splitter, you avoid the in-house 
wiring.
