All of the letters in Epistolae ad Societatem -- Letters 108-146 -- had been written by 1702, but they were not published until 1719. In the meantime, Leeuwenhoek wrote the 46 letters in Send-Brieven -- Letters I-XLVI -- and published them in Dutch 1718. It wasn't until the following year that he published the two volumes in Latin, Epistolae ad Societatem -- Letters 108-146 -- and Epistolae Physiologicae -- Letters I-XLVI. Why did Leeuwenhoek wait 17 years to publish Epistolae ad Societatem? Why, in the same year, did J. A. Langerak publish the one in Leiden and Adriaan Beman the other in Delft?
