A programming language is low level when its programs require attention to the irrelevant. ~ Alan Perlis[1]

A low-level language describes the smallest steps of a machine at the highest level of detail. Relative to its machine, such languages are often described as "close to the metal": the semantics of the machine correspond to language syntax.
