MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms manages a unique resource for making and measuring things on length scales from atoms to buildings. It is not a user facility; rather than requiring fees, it is funded by CBA's research programs for use by participating researchers, with the remaining time shared by collaborating programs and classes. The tools are grouped by nano, micro, meso, and macro feature sizes, with instrumentation, biology, computation, and communication capabilities.

Requests from approved projects for periodic training of new users should be sent to shop-admin@cba.mit.edu, and for flow control these must come from the research group heads. They should include the reason for the request, the institutional status of the person being trained, and what capabilities they want access to. Note that this training provides authorization to work independently; short-term or occasional use is handled by supervision by previously trained users.

Use of these facilities outside of CBA is accommodated case-by-case by request to shop-admin@cba.mit.edu. This is limited by both capacity and compatibility, and is done on a cost recovery basis.
