Population for Japan
[Total Population]
- The total population was 127,692 thousand, and decreased by 79 thousand compared with the previous year. The rate of decrease was 0.06 percent. The total population decreased for the first time in three years.
- The male population was 62,251 thousand, a decrease of 59 thousand (0.09 percent), while the female population was 65,441 thousand, a decrease of 20 thousand (0.03 percent). The male population had decreased for four years, while the female population decreased for the first time since 1950.
- The natural change decreased for two years, while the migration change decreased for the first time in three years.

[Population by Age Group]
- The population aged 0 to 14 (child population) was 17,176 thousand (13.5 percent of the total population; unchanged from the previous year).
- The population aged 15 to 64 (productive-age population) was 82,300 thousand (64.5 percent of the total population; a decrease of 0.5 points from the previous year).
- The population aged 65 and over (aged population) was 28,216 thousand (22.1 percent of the total population, a record-high rate; an increase of 0.6 points from the previous year).
Population by Prefecture

- The top five prefectures were Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Osaka-fu, Aichi-ken and Saitama-ken. These prefectures made up about 35.3 percent of the total population.
- Tokyo-to had the largest population in 2008 (10.1 percent of the total population).
[Rates of Population Change]
- The population increased in 7 prefectures. The number of the prefectures showing an increase decreased by 3 prefectures as compared with the previous year's 10 prefectures, and fell to single digits for the first time. Tokyo-to had the highest rate of increase in population.
- The population decreased in 40 prefectures. Akita-ken had the highest decrease in the percentage of population.

[Population by Age Group]
- The percentage of the child population was the highest in Okinawa-ken and lowest in Akita-ken and rose from the previous year only in Tokyo-to.
- The percentage of the productive-age population was the highest in Tokyo-to and declined in all prefectures except for Yamagata-ken.
- The percentage of the aged population was the highest in Shimane-ken and rose in all prefectures.
- The percentage of the aged population exceeded that of the child population in all prefectures except for Okinawa-ken.
- The percentage of the population 75 years old and over exceeded that of the child population in 12 prefectures and doubled as compared with the previous year.
