Population for Japan
[Total Population]
- Total population was 127,771 thousand, and has increased by 1 thousand this past year. The rate of increase was 0.00 percent. Both population change and the rate were broadly flat.
- Male was 62,310 thousand and female was 65,461 thousand. Male was decreasing for three years. Female was increasing continuously.
- The natural change was a decrease of 2 thousand, and it became a decrease for the first time since 1950. The migration change was an increase of 4 thousand.

- The population aged 0 to 14 (Child population) was 17,293 thousand (13.5 percent, the record-low rate, of the total population; decreasing of 0.1 point from the previous year).
- The population aged 15 to 64 (Productive-age population) was 83,015 thousand (65.0 percent of the total population; decreasing of 0.5 point from the previous year).
- The population aged 65 and over (Aged population) was 27,464 thousand (21.5 percent, the record-high rate, of the total population; increasing of 0.7 point from the previous year).
Population for Prefectures
[Population by Prefectures]
- Top five prefectures were Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi and Saitama. These prefectures made up about 35.1 percent of the total population.
- Tokyo had the largest population, and the percentage was 10.0% of the total population for the first time in 28 years.
[Rates of Population Change]
- An increase in Population was seen in 10 prefectures, of which the widths of increase had expanded in 4 prefectures of Tokyo area (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba). Tokyo had the highest rate of increase in population.
- A decrease in population was seen in 37 prefectures, of which the widths of decrease had expanded in 25 prefectures. Akita had the highest rate of decrease in population.

[Population by Age Group]
- The percentage of the Child population was highest in Okinawa and lowest in Tokyo and rose in only Tokyo from the previous year.
- The percentage of the Productive-age population was highest in Tokyo and declined in all prefectures from the previous year.
- The percentage of the Aged population was highest in Shimane and rose in all prefectures.
- The percentage of the Aged population exceeded the percentage of the Child population in all prefectures except for Okinawa.
- The percentage of 75 years old and over exceeded the percentage of the Child population in 6 prefectures (Akita, Yamagata, Shimane, Yamaguchi, Tokushima and Kochi).
