Pinball is a game released for the Family Computer in 1984 and the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. It is based on the arcade machine of the same name. A competitive multiplayer version of this game was released on the VS. System under the name VS. Pinball . Hudson Soft had planned to release ports of Pinball for various Japanese home computers in 1985, but these ports were later canceled.[12] The Family Computer version was preceded by a Game & Watch version in December 1983,[13] but unlike the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System releases, it is not a game of the Super Mario franchise.

The home console version of Pinball was re-released through the Family Computer Disk System's Disk Writer, for the Game Boy Advance's e-Reader as part of Series One, on the Virtual Console for the Wii and Wii U, and on the Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Classics application for the Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay[edit ]

Pinball is a game where the player controls the flippers of a virtual pinball machine. The game has three scenes: scene A, scene B, and the Bonus Stage. The goal of the game is to earn points in order to achieve a high score.

Gameplay begins when the player launches a ball with the striker from the bottom of scene B to the top of scene A. Gameplay switches between scene A and scene B depending on where the ball moves. In scene A and scene B, the player controls the flippers on either side of the screen to deflect the ball. If the ball falls off the bottom of scene B, the player loses the ball. If the ball enters the hole in scene B, the Bonus Stage begins.

In the Bonus Stage, the player controls Mario carrying a platform. Mario must rescue a lady by bouncing the ball off of his platform so it passes through bingo lamps, in order to decrease the size of the floor so the lady falls through. Mario must then catch the lady with his platform and bring her safely to one of the exits on either side of the stage. If the ball falls off the bottom of the screen, it is ejected from the hole kicker in scene A and the pinball game continues. If Mario allows the lady to fall to the bottom, the player loses their ball and returns to scene B where they must launch a new ball; if the player has no more balls, allowing the lady to hit the bottom results in a Game Over.

Controls[edit ]

  • +Control Pad – control left flipper; control Mario in the Bonus Stage
  • A Button B Button – activate striker; control right flipper

Pinball Parts[edit ]

The following is a list of objects and characters that appear and are interactive parts in the game, referred in the manual as Pinball Parts.[14]

Characters[edit ]

Image Name Scene(s) Description
A penguin as seen in Pinball Penguins A Penguins are one of three possible slot windows. Getting a combination of three penguins raises the up-post.
A seal from scene A of Pinball. Seals A Two seals are idling on scene A. When all the lane lights are turned off, the seals will balance beach balls as the central bumper keeps bouncing for five seconds, netting a bonus of 2000 points total.
A chick from Pinball. Chicks B Birds that hatch from eggs, which then flap their wings. If all eggs are hatched, stoppers appear.
Mario Mario C The player controls Mario in the Bonus Stage. He carries a platform above his head to bounce the pinball into another direction.
Lady Lady C Mario must catch the lady (also known as Pauline) when she falls down, then carry her safely to the exit.

Objects[edit ]

Image Name Scene(s) Description
The ball from Pinball. Ball The ball is used to interact with Pinball Parts to earn points. The player starts with three balls, and earns an extra ball for every 50,000 points earned. If the player loses all of their balls, the game is over.
The flippers from Pinball. Flippers A, B Flippers are used to bounce the ball in scene A and scene B.
The striker from Pinball. Striker B The striker is used to launch a ball from the bottom of scene B to the top of scene A.
The score courses from Pinball. Courses A On top of scene A are three short courses, each indicated with a corresponding score that the player gets added when the ball goes through one of them.
Lanes A Two long lanes are found in scene A, with the right lane leading to the slot windows. Going through the right lane not only activates the slot windows, but also nets 500 points.
A "3" icon that can be displayed on a slot window from Pinball. A "7" icon that can be displayed on a slot window from Pinball. A penguin as seen in Pinball Slot windows A If the ball passes through the lane on the right of scene A, the slot windows start rotating. They are accompanied by penguins.
The slot target from Pinball. Slot target A If the ball hits the slot target, the slot window below it stops rotating.
A block post from Pinball. Up-post A, B The up-post (also known as block post) prevents the ball from falling in between the flippers, and can appear in scene A and scene B.
The targets from scene A from Pinball. The targets in scene B of Pinball. Targets A, B Four targets are found in scene A (referred to as Targets 1), while seven are found in scene B (referred to as Targets 2), each disappearing when hit. If all targets in a scene are gone, a bonus of 1000 points is awarded. In addition, hitting all targets in scene B causes the exit to appear.
Lane lights A The left lane is filled with several of these. The player gets 100 points for each lane light they turn off.
A hole from Pinball. Hole kicker A If the ball enters this hole in scene A, it will be ejected immediately. Exiting the bonus stage of scene C will also return the ball to scene A via the hole kicker.
A pink bumper from Pinball. A yellow-colored bumper from Pinball. A blue bumper from Pinball. Bumpers A, B, C Bumpers award points and cause the ball to bounce around. They appear in three colors: pink, yellow, and blue. Pink bumpers are found in scenes A and B, a yellow is shown in scene B as well, and blue bumpers appear in the Bonus Stage.
A face down card from Pinball. Each type of face up card from Pinball. Cards B If the ball turns all five cards face up, the up-post in scene B is raised.
The five card lanes from Pinball. Card lanes B Also simply referred to as lanes, five of these are placed below each card. Going through one card lane will turn its corresponding card face up, netting 500 points.
A hole from Pinball. Hole B, C If the ball reaches the hole in scene B, it enters the Bonus Stage. This hole briefly appears in the Bonus Stage to eject the ball.
An egg from Pinball. Egg B Eggs hatch into chicks if the ball touches them.
A stopper from Pinball. Stopper B Two stoppers appear in scene B if three chicks are hatched at the same time.
The exit from Pinball. Exit B, C In scene B, an exit appears when all targets in scene B are hit, leading back to the striker. In the Bonus Stage, Mario must lead the lady to the exit for a bonus of 10,000 points.
The slingshots from Pinball. Slingshots B Triangular objects above the flippers in scene B. They bounce the ball away and nets the player 10 points.
Side lanes B Going through a side lane behind one of the slingshots will cause the targets in scene B to reappear.
Sprites of each color and number of bingo lamp from Pinball. Bingo lamps C Bingo lamps change color if the ball passes through them. If all of the bingo lamps with the same number become the same color, the floor below the lady becomes shorter.
The floors from Pinball. Floors C The lady walks about over three of these. If one of the floors disappears, the lady will fall through.
