The Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) was a group of video coding experts from ITU-T Study Group 16 (VCEG) and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11 (MPEG) created in 2010 to develop a new generation video coding standard to further reduce, by approximately 50% the data rate needed for high quality video coding, as compared to the then state-of-the-art AVC standard (Rec. ITU-T H.264 | ISO/IEC 14496-10).

JCT-VC developed the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) algorithm, that is published as twin text by ITU, ISO and IEC as Rec. ITU-T H.265 | ISO/IEC 23008-2. The group undertook further development and maintenance of HEVC until July 2020. Currently, HEVC is maintained in another joint team of video coding experts, the JVET.

In October 2017, the US Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded JCT-VC a Primetime Emmy for outstanding achievement in engineering for the development of HEVC that enabled efficient delivery in ultra-high-definition (UHD) content over multiple distribution channels and enjoys significant adoption in the marketplace.

Rec. ITU-T H.264 | ISO/IEC 14496-10, commonly referred to as H.264/MPEG-4-AVC, H.264/AVC, or MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC, has been developed as a joint activity within the JVT. This standard will also be maintained by the JVET.
