The Institute of Statistical Mathematics 75th Anniversary Celebration
Marking the 75th anniversary of ISM - 5 June 2019
ISM is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its 5 June 1944 founding with open houses, open lectures, and other special programs starting in June of 2018. These lead up to the Commemorative Ceremony at Hitotsubashi Hall on 5 June 2019 to mark the day of the establishment of ISM. We hope that these events will bring you opportunities to become interested in the fascinating world of world of statistical mathematics.
Statistical mathematics studies how to extract essential information from incomplete/uncertain data in order to obtain knowledge, predict the future, and make decisions. In this way, statistical mathematics is an important tool for understanding and controlling real-world phenomena. The methods of statistical mathematics, by their nature, require years to be appreciated, but once their usefulness is recognized, they are applied to a multitude of situations, much like the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) proposed by the late Dr. Hirotugu Akaike, the eighth Director-General of ISM. The importance of statistical mathematics is growing faster than ever today in our modern society with its continuously increasing amount of data, and we look forward to your continued support and advice regarding the growth of research and education by ISM.
