I hate housework – I regard it as the oppression of women. For my generation of feminists, the kitchen sink represented nearly everything we wanted to escape from. All that domesticity was so limiting to women’s ambitions. Why be a skivvy when you could be an intellectual?

When I first went to France as an au pair, I didn’t think French women were liberated. I thought they were enslaved by a culture that compelled two elaborate meals a day, involving food planning, shopping, preparing, cutting, chopping, cooking and presentation. All undertaken by women in the home, though male chefs were in restaurants.
