Noki Bay Blue Coins
This page of IGN's Super Mario Sunshine Walkthrough contains the locations of every Blue Coin in Noki Bay. Each world in Super Mario Sunshine contains 30 Blue Coins which are spread throughout multiple episodes, but not every episode contains a Blue Coin. Collecting 10 Blue Coins means you can trade them for a new Shine Sprite. Use the checklist to keep track of your progress!
Clean Water, the Cliff, and the Rocket Nozzle
Note that you don't have to get all the Blue Coins we've listed under Episode 1 right then. You can also get them later. As you clean the water in later episodes, you can easily just swim to the coins in the water.
The most difficult part of Noki Bay's Blue Coins is keeping track which alcove you've cleared out and what still remains. The picture above shows you the toughest Blue Coin locations on the main cliffside. The walkthrough below goes through each, along with a way to check them off.
You can also use the Rocket Nozzle to help you grab some of the earlier coins, though it's a bit of a detour. Check Blue Coin #14 if you're wondering where the Rocket Nozzle is in Noki Bay -- we've got full instructions on how to get it.
Noki Bay Episode 1 Blue Coins
Blue Coin #1
The water is poisoned and damages you in Episode 1 -- so you can also postpone the first three coins and do them later. But they're easy and fun to get, so you might as well do them now. The first two coins are clearly visible from your starting location. The closest one is hovering above the water in the bay, right behind the boat.
Jump and hover to the boat, then use your regular spray nozzle to propel to boat over to the first coin and jump for it.
Blue Coin #2
The second Blue Coin is not far away, also hovering above the water -- but near the coast. Use your spray nozzle to move the boat over to the shore and jump to it.
Blue Coin #3
The third Blue Coin is easier to get when the water isn't poisoned, but if you're careful, you can nab it as early as Episode 1. You'll have to dive for it.
Start at the Tanuki's boat house; the little hut with the thatched roof. You can see the trail of coins leading down into the water in the area near the wall. Dive down near the shore where the water doesn't hurt you (only the surface causes damage) and follow the trail of coins.
Don't collect all the golden coins, however. These coins replenish your life bar -- and that applies to the underwater health (air) gauge as well. Only grab a few coins on the way down, then carefully avoid the fish and grab the Blue Coin. On the ascent, grab gold coins to replenish your air.
Blue Coin #4
The Cliffside Coins
The next few coins can be gotten out of order and in various ways. For example, there is a Rocket Nozzle high up on the mountain as early as Episode 1 that you can grab if you struggle with wall-jumping and hovering (more below). But we suggest using the plain-old hover nozzle. You can get pretty much everywhere with it.
A key to exploring this area is this vertical shaft. It enables you to get to the top of the mountain very fast -- and it can even be expanded temporarily by shooting water at a secret panel above it. For now, head to the shaft.
Wall-jump up in the back of the shaft and hop, slide, or hover into the opening on the top left. This one, on the left:
That opening leads to a secret passage through the mountain. It's filled with coins, too. You'll see Mario as a silhouette as you're heading to the left. Just follow the trail to the end.
You'll emerge from the door opening on the left rock tower, underneath the water panel. Flip jump and hover up to the top opening.
You'll get catapulted to the top of the mountain into an area with a palm tree and a golden bird circling above.
You'll be able to access a few areas from up here. For now, we're heading to a ledge far below -- which you could also reach with the Rocket Nozzle, among other ways. The green ledge is within hover distance, but you'll have to drop quite far down.
Take a leap of faith off the cliff edge and then as you're falling, trigger your hover jets when you're close. Drop down when you're above the area shown below. Even if you miscalculate and fire (water?) your jets too early, remember, you can always trigger a ground pound before you impact, negating all fall damage.
Follow this ledge area away from the rock tower you just jumped from to the corner of the bay with the Tanuki Boat House below. Head around the corner and you'll see M Graffiti on the wall in the distance.
Carefully jump and hover to that next platform, clean off the graffiti and collect your Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #5
Repeat the above steps for the next Blue Coin -- as in, wall-jump up and go through the hidden shaft to the top of the mountain (with the golden bird and palm tree). This time, you're aiming for the rock-cut structure with the seven panels and opening in the middle. It's on top of the vertical shaft you just wall-jumped up.
Jump off the cliff and hover over to the ledge below the structure. The panels recess when they get wet, so shoot a beam of water at the panel on the bottom left. It will reveal the Blue Coin you came here for.
Blue Coin #6
Don't leave yet. In the same area as Blue Coin #5, spray the upper-right panel. You can do this by going into the aim view (right thumb stick) while standing on the ledge.
The panels you hit with water will all recede, enabling you to get to the next Blue Coin in the top-right alcove.
Blue Coin #7
Don't leave yet! There's yet another Blue Coin nearby. This one is below, to the right of the opening with the panels you're standing on (when facing the wall). But first, descend down to the ledges below the panel structure.
You'll want to carefully drop down until you're on the widest, bottom-most platform attached to the cliff wall. You'll now be able to barely see another brick-filled opening in the rock face below.
Jump and hover over to the rock wall above the opening and you can safely slide down the rock surface and land in the opening. Mario will hold on to the ledge and you can climb up to collect the Blue Coin.
Alternate Path
There's an alternate, and way more showy way to grab this coin -- and it's no doubt the way the designers intended for you to nab it.
Land on the ledge in front of the rock wall opening above the vertical shaft. You can jump and hover to it from the top of the mountain or use the Rocket Nozzle. Spray the panel to trigger a chain reaction that greatly extends the vertical shaft and enables you to wall-jump up to additional hidden passages.
Wall-jump up as soon as the shaft has opened up and stay towards the front of the shaft. You'll find an opening on the right side, about halfway up the shaft. It can be tricky to align your jumps and not end up in the middle or towards the back of the shaft, but you can always use the hover move to float over to the opening.
It's directly connected to the alcove on the front of the rock face where you can grab the Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #8
From the last coin, jump and hover over to the elevated, green area you had to so courageously jump to for Blue Coin #4. It's easiest to spot the next coin from over here. In another bricked-up opening, you'll see a Blue Coin in a window. You can, of course, also slide down the rock wall from the top of the mountain -- but you won't have the same visibility.
There's a ledge you can easily land on below it, too. So you can just jump and hover over from here.
Mario will either land on the ledge or hang on to the window sill. Jump or climb up and grab the coin.
It's very easy to hop over and grab Blue Coin #13 from here. Perhaps do that first, if you haven't gotten it yet.
Blue Coin #9
Spray the panel above the shaft in the central cliff (which you must fall to from the mountain top or rocket up to with the Rocket Nozzle) and wait for the shaft to extend and open up all the way. You now have to wall jump up to get to an opening in the shaft on the right side, right here:
Hover to the opening or climb up, then run through the hidden passage to the opening in the cliff wall.
Grab the Blue Coin.
Alternate Path
You can get the Rocket Nozzle from the top of the mountain and rocket up to the opening from the green platform below. It's much easier, if you don't count the hassle of getting the rocket.
Blue Coin #10
Depending on whether you're using the Rocket Nozzle, either stand in front of the leftmost cliff with the palm tree and bird at the top and rocket up, or head up to the top of the mountain by using the main shaft and fall down from the summit and slide down the rock face to the platform below.
Spray the wall to open two hidden alcoves. The one on the left contains the Blue Coin.
Blue Coin Shine Unlocked
Congrats, you can trade these 10 Coins in for a new Shine.
Blue Coin #11
From the last coin location, drop down to the next opening the rock wall below. Spray the wall panels on the left of the opening to reveal the Blue Coin at the top.
Alternate Path
The opening in this alcove is also reachable from the vertical shaft. When extended, you can wall jump your way to a secret tunnel on the left that also leads here. But that's way more work than just dropping down from the top.
Blue Coin #12
Reachable from the top of the mountain or from the platforms loading down from the top of the extended shaft, this alcove shows a single alcove by default.
However, spray the wall and two additional alcoves will open up, with the top one revealing the next Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #13
From the last Blue Coin, you can jump, hover, or slide down to Blue Coin #8, in case you haven't collected it. It's easiest to do that from the small alcove just above it. You can also fall and hover to it from the mountain top or from across the way. But our next coins is actually over to the right.
Jump and hover to the alcove with the two panels and spray them to make them recede. The right of the two will reveal its secret Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #14
The Rocket Nozzle can can be found at the top of the mountain on the other side of the bay.
To get there, take the path up with the vase elevator and the water wheels and then spray the glowing shapes on the walls to extend platforms for you to more easily climb the mountainside.
Take a shortcut by wall-jumping off this wall. up to where the Noki with the trampoline is waiting.
Head to the right instead of going to him (in other words, ignore the arrow signs).
Follow the brick platforms up the mountain side until you get to a larger ledge with an opening and the Rocket Nozzle crate inside.
You can grab Blue Coin #15 first since it's in plain sight (described below) pretty easily before grabbing the Rocket Nozzle, but let's focus on the one that requires the nozzle first. Simply stand on the shadow cast by the golden coins above your head, charge the rocket, jump, and release/fire the Rocket Nozzle to rocket straight up.
The Blue Coin is at the top of the trail. Be sure to trigger the rocket move when you're at the apex of your jump.
Blue Coin #15
The second Blue Coin in this location is much closer, in the opening right above the Rocket Nozzle crate. Just back/flip jump to the ledge.
Blue Coin #16
Do you remember how to get to the top of the waterfall? It's via the climb near the start of the level, leading to the water-powered elevator and platforms leading up. You'll eventually have to wall jump your way up to the platform with the trampoline. You can hover across the gap (or drop the trampoline below for a future shortcut) and you'll soon stand on the ledge shown below. You can already see the opening below it.
Jump off and hover back to the wall with the alcove, underneath the cliff outcropping.
The coins inside that alcove. But there's also an ice block behind it that you can melt by spraying it with water. Inside is a 1Up.
Blue Coin #17
The opening high up in the rock wall towards the center of the bay can be reached from the purple conch shell on the tower. Yes, you can climb it with the Rocket Nozzle, but that'll make it difficult to get over to the coin. Instead, start your ascent from the green plateau that you can jump and hover down to from the tall mountain top (with the golden bird and palm tree. See Blue Coin #4).
You can hop across and hover to the shells attached to the tower. Perform flip jump and hover over to the next highest shell.
This way, you can climb all the way to the top to this shell platform.
The conch may look like it's out of range, but it's not. You can do a flip jump and hover up and over to the lip of the shell opening. Mario will cling on and you can climb up.
Another clip jump from here, and you're on top of the conch.
All that's left to do is to leap off the top of the shell and hover over to the opening in the cliffside. Slide down into the opening or fall into it to grab the Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #18
From the starting point of the world, use the water-wheel elevator to climb up (spray water at the vase) and get to the top water wheel. There's a thin ledge between the wheel and the platform it's attached to.
Walk forward to the edge that faces the rock wall and you'll be able to see a network of thin ledges on the right and a few panels straight ahead of you on the opposite wall.
You can spray the panels to make them recede (which comes in handy for the next coin), and also spray the right, inner wall from the safety of the ledge to open up a few secret openings.
You can head to the first alcove and then hang from the ledge on the inner wall and work your way over to the newly created opening, or, just jump off the ledge and hover over to the tall alcove in the corner (see screenshot below). There's a Blue Coin hidden inside, on the bottom.
Blue Coin #19
The next coin is below the one you collected, in the other secret area that opened up. You can drop and hover into the opening, then jump up to grab the Blue Coin.
Blue Coin #20
Make your way back to the thin platform behind the water wheel. You can get there from the last Blue Coin by hanging from the ledge and moving back up to the right and then jumping back up. If you didn't do it yet, make sure to spray the wall panels on the rock wall with the long, continuous ledge to make the recede into the rock wall.
You'll now want to hover across and catch the thin ledge and then immediately move to the left. Mario will get tired hanging from the ledge and eventually fall -- so you'll want to start as far over to the left as possible. Or, you can pull yourself up and rest in the alcoves you opened up on your way.
Move all the way to the left to the opening with the holes above it. Climb into the opening.
You can now wall jump your way up all the way to the top in this covered shaft. There's a Blue Coin visible behind the set of windows up top.
Blue Coin Shine Unlocked
Congrats, you can trade these 10 Coins in for a new Shine.
Noki Bay Episode 2 Blue Coins
Blue Coin #21
Spray the wall panel above the old Noki, and jump into the weird structure it creates. In the middle is a Blue Coin.
Wall jump and hover your way to this Blue Coin before the wall maze recedes again.
Blue Coin #22
There is another hidden wall maze, which you can reach from the green platform partway up the mountain. Spray the wall panel to make the maze and openings appear.
The Blue Coin is in the second window opening in the top row. You can wall jump your way up to the ledge below, then jump out and hover up to the top to grab the coin.
Blue Coin #23
Defeat the Giant Squid at the top of this level just like when you went for the Shine in Episode 2. When the squid is gone, you'll be able to enter the tomb below.
Inside, spray the vase on the right wall to make a Blue Coin appear.
Blue Coin #24
Spray the second vase in the Noki Tomb where the Shine is in Episode 2.
Noki Bay Episode 4 Blue Coins
Blue Coin #25
In the underwater area in Episodes 4 and 8, atop the tall pillar on the left side of the temple front with the many window openings. Swim up to it to grab the Blue Coin, but don't forget to nab golden coins to replenish your air.
Blue Coin #26
In the underwater area in Episodes 4 and 8, find the next Blue Coin on top on a medium-height pillar.
Blue Coin #27
In the underwater area in Episodes 4 and 8, the next Blue Coin is atop one of the pillars right under the ceiling near the outside wall
Blue Coin #28
In the underwater area in Episodes 4 and 8, find the next Blue Coin atop one of the middle-level pillars. It's to the right of the temple front with the many windows.
Noki Bay Episode 6 Blue Coins
Blue Coin #29
In Episode 6, new O Graffiti appears near the boathouse. Spray it from atop the boathouse, jump-dive off to clear some distance, then hover-swim across (spray with your jets while swimming. You can also use the boat and try to speed up the journey, but given its touchy controls, the old-fashioned way is likely to get you to success more easily.
Blue Coin #30
The counterpart of #29. Shoot it from the rocks or better yet, one of the seashells on the spire, jump-dive toward the boathouse, and hover-swim across.
Blue Coin Shine Unlocked
Congrats, you can trade these 10 Coins in for a new Shine.
