Fish are one of the main things you will find yourself collecting during the fleeting moments you have between exploring the mines and watering your crops. Fish can be sold, used as ingredients to make meals, turned into dyes or garments at the Spinning Wheel, or part of Community Center bundles. Some NPCs also love receiving certain types of fish as gifts.

Each fish you catch and ship also counts towards your Perfection Tracker.

How to Fish in Stardew Valley

To fish, you need a fishing rod. But, unlike other tools like the hoe or the watering can, you won't start the game with a fishing rod. Instead, Willy will send you a letter on the second day of Spring (the second day in-game) asking you to see him at the beach. A quest called To The Beach is added to your Journal.

This happens no matter what farm you start with, so if you're focusing on fishing, try to get through your first day fast! The beach is south of the main town area.

So long as you get to the beach anytime before 5 PM, a cut scene starts and Willy gives you a Bamboo Pole. As you increase your fishing level by fishing more, you'll be able to purchase better rods from Willy's shop. As with other skills, you'll know you've leveled up your fishing whenever you see a message that says "You've got some new ideas to sleep on..."

How to Play the Fishing Mini-Game

Once you have a rod, equip it and head to the nearest body of water to start fishing. Once there, use the how to fish guide below to catch your fish!

1. Use the tool button to cast the rod near the water. The kind of fish you'll get depends on the location, time of day, and weather.
2. After initiating the cast, a meter will appear, which you can use to decide how far you want the line to go.
3. Release the button to cast the line.
4. Wait for a little until you hear a distinct sound and an exclamation point appears above your character; this means a fish has bitten! Quickly click the "Use Tool" button to begin reeling in the fish.
5. If you successfully initiated the mini-game, you'll see a large "HIT!" near your fishing rod.
6. The fishing mini-game starts. To catch a fish, all you have to do is maintain the small fish icon inside the green rectangle bar until the progress bar on the right side of the fishing box is filled. Do this by keeping the moving fish icon in the green bar that you control by pressing the tool button. If you hold it, the green bar rises. If you let go, it'll drop.
7. The progress bar on the right rises the longer you keep the fish aligned with your green bar and falls when the fish is outside it. Once the progress bar is full, you'll have successfully caught the fish!

Keep in mind that certain factors can make fishing easier. Things like the type of fish you're catching, using bait or a tackle, your fishing skill, or the rod you're using will affect the fishing mini-game. If you encounter a fish that moves erratically and quickly, it's likely a rare fish!

Keep an eye out for bubbles in the water. This is a clear sign that there could be a lot of fish (or a lot of trash and fish) in that spot in the water. These spots can sometimes be inaccessible, though. But if it's a spot your line can reach, go for it! You'll get an increased number of bites if you hit the bubble spot. You'll know you've hit the bubble spot when you see blue sparkles around the bobber.

But what if you do catch trash? Don't sell it. Trash won't earn you any money. If you've got the storage space, you can keep it until you have a Recycling Machine (or toss it if you don't have the space). The Recycling Machine allows you to turn trash into resources. Trash includes things like Broken CDs and Driftwood. You'll know it when you see it!
