Checklists
Octopath Traveler 0 has 35 characters for you to meet and recruit as you journey through the continent of Orsterra. You can have 7 of them, along with your Protagonist, in your party. This means you have a lot of options when it comes to party composition, and there's enough overlap that in most cases you don't feel penalized for picking someone due to liking their portrait, story, or personality.
Each character you recruit has a Job. Many of them fall into the basic 8 which are available to your Protagonist at the start of the game (Warrior, Thief, Merchant, Apothecary, Scholar, Cleric, Hunter, Dancer). But some characters like Stia have a unique Job, such as Architect. This denotes that the character is pivotal to the plot, and may also mean that they depart from your party after certain events transpire. Read on to learn more about each Character, their Job, and how to Recruit them to your party!

Stia
- Recruited: as part of the main story after completing the Prologue.
- Class: Architect
- Weapons: Axe, Dagger
- Starting Battle Skills: First Aid, Chop Wood
Stia's Architect class is a support similar to the Apothecary. However, there are a couple changes, first up she uses a Dagger (focusing on Phys. damage) instead of the Apothecary's tome. In addition her Incidental Heal passive is particularly nice for health sustain in the early game. Full Cheer provides BP regeneration to your party. She also has a couple unique skills in Stroke of Genius / Greater Distribution skills provide attribute buffs to Stia and lets her spread them. But random buffs are unreliable and other characters have better buffs which affect the entire party. Overall she's a solid early support but you find a variety of strong support characters later.

Alexia
- Recruited: in Theatropolis by completing An Encounter with Alexia.
- Class: Scholar
- Weapons: Tome, Staff
- Starting Battle Skills: Lightning Bolt, Duskfall
Alexia is a Scholar with an abundance of AoE (area of effect) damage, and the ability to Analyze foes, determining their weak points. She can buff her Elem. Atk. and lower enemy Elem. Def making her a solid damage dealer. Remember to Boost her Analyze if you need to discover more weak points! In comparison to the Protagonist Scholar, it takes longer for Alexia to gain passive Analysis as you need to unlock all 7 Battle Skills. But when you do her version is arguably better since it triggers after each of her turns, instead of at the start of combat. Her Ultimate does massive damage to all foes and we do mean truly massive, it's not uncommon to hit for 9,999 (or more once you raise the damage cap). This makes Alexia an excellent choice when you want to nuke the battlefield!

Viator
- Recruited: in Valore by completing An Encounter with Viator.
- Class: Warrior
- Weapons: Sword, Polearm
- Starting Battle Skills: Provoke, Wild Blade
Viator is a tank who can taunt enemies into attacking him, then prevent the Physical damage with a variety of Parry and Evasion skills. His ultimate, Fluid Stance, triggers a powerful retaliation when Viator is attacked. This means Viator shines when enemies attack him. Remember to use defensive buffs and healing spells to help him survive! Offensively, he has a variety of Sword and Polearm skills, the most notable of which is Charging Strike, a skill that gains damage when used from the back row. This is powerful, and can be transferred to other polearm wielders like Warriors or Merchants.

Celsus
- Recruited: in Valore by completing An Encounter with Celsus in the tavern.
- Class: Thief
- Weapons: Dagger, Sword
- Starting Battle Skills: Goad, Double Throw
Celsus is a Thief who can use his evasive abilities to avoid damage, making him well suited for the tank role. In addition, many of his offensive Dagger skills have an unusually high chance of dealing critical damage. Unfortunately, he does not get access to the "Steal" skill typical of the Thief class, this may be due to his religious devotion. His ultimate technique turns him into the ultimate tank by taunting foes while allowing him to dodge physical attacks for the duration.

Phenn
- Recruited: by completing Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 1: The Hunter Phenn.
- Class: Hunter
- Weapons: Bow, Axe
- Starting Battle Skills: Repeated Shot, Stout Wall
Phenn the Hunter is another character who is well suited for the tank role. He can use Stout Wall to raise his Phys. Def. then Provoke to draw enemy attention. After that you can use Avenging Triple Shot, a skill whose damage increases the more hits Phenn has taken during the turn. This is a great way to deal considerable damage to bosses, and hits 3 times which makes it effective for Breaking. His passives allow him to retaliate when hit with physical attacks, and boost his own Phys. Atk. after taking damage. Just beware, Phenn's weakness is Elem. damage! Since you cannot train Avenging Triple Shot, this combined with his damage reduction ultimate are your primary reasons for using Phenn over the other tanks who primarily bolster their own defenses.

|---|---|---|---|
| Repeated Shot | 8 | Deal bow damage to a foe 2 time(s). | Yes |

Macy
- Recruited: in Emberglow by completing An Encounter with Macy.
- Class: Apothecary
- Weapons: Axe, Tome
- Starting Battle Skills: First Aid, Poisonous Touch
Apothecary is a support class, but Macy has considerable offensive ability thanks to her Poison and Paralysis. Poisonous Touch deals up front damage, and the poison eats away at boss health over time. Meanwhile, Paralysis Formula inflicts a status that can prevent enemies from acting. Boosting this for additional duration is a great way to turn the tide on bosses. Just keep in mind, you have a chance to inflict it, and Paralysis has a chance to trigger this isn't a guarantee the enemies can't act! When it comes to support, her Boon of Healing passive is particularly nice, and Expert First Aid is a good way to heal while automatically swapping to another character for next turn. Her major weak point is her ultimate which grants random effects.
Macy's Skills
| Skill | SP Cost | Effect | Train |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Aid | 6 | Restore HP of an Ally. | Yes |

- Recruited: in Emberglow by beating her in battle during An Encounter with Delitia.
- Class: Hunter
- Weapons: Bow, Axe
- Starting Battle Skills: Piercing Shadow, Stray Arrows
Delitia is a Hunter who specializes in dealing damage and debuffing. Her utility comes in the form of secondary effects on damage skills like Piercing Shadow and Soporific Ice Fog. As you unlock her Battle Skills she gains passives that extend the duration of debuffs, keeping them active on foes for several turns without the need to boost or reapply them. Most of her skills are SP efficient, meaning you can spam them. Her Devastating Shot has a small chance to instantly kill enemies, but you should primarily use it for the damage, and treat the instant kill as a nice surprise when it happens. Her ultimate is powerful, as it buffs the physical stats of all allies while simultaneously debuffing all enemies.

- Class: Dancer
- Weapons: Fan, Dagger
- Starting Battle Skills: Mole Dance, Dance of Repose
Saoirse is a Dancer who offers a variety of support skills paired with some offensive spells and a powerful healing dance. Her Dance of Respite can be boosted to provide HP regeneration for a long period of time. It's especially effective after she unlocks the Invigorate passive, providing SP regeneration in addition to the healing. When she's not providing HP/SP, Saoirse can also buff allies to raise their Speed or Phys. Def. and put enemies to sleep or deal wind damage to them. As if she wasn't already good enough, Saoirse's Ultimate lets allies bypass normal Weak Point requirements which is especially devastating when cast on someone with a variety of multi-hit attacks!

Sazantos
- Recruited: as part of the main story during the quest "Finale".
- Class: Flameguard
- Weapon: Sword
- Starting Battle Skills: Aggressive Slash, Radiant Light
Sazantos is a special character who joins you at the start of the Finale questline. His skills are downright overpowered, in many cases they are a better version of a skill available to other classes. For example, why merely raise one or two attributes when you can raise 4 at once! Divine Flame is particularly useful for bypassing an enemy's normal weaknesses, this makes up for the fact that as a Flameguard, Sazantos is only limited to 1 weapon. While all of his skills are amazing, they do have a high SP cost. Since Sazantos has a unique class his skills cannot be mastered.
Later, he returns at the start of the Bestower of Wealth / Power / Fame story arcs before departing yet again after Bestower of Fame.
You need to obtain the game's true ending to recruit him as a permanent party member and complete "The Summoned" achievement.
Sazantos' Skills
| Skill | SP Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Aggressive Slash | 22 | Deal sword damage to random foes 3 time(s). |
| Radiant Light | 19 | Deal light damage to random foes 3 time(s). |

Tressa
- Recruited: in Rippletide by completing An Encounter with Tressa.
- Class: Merchant
- Weapons: Polearm, Bow
- Starting Battle Skills: Collect, Tradewinds
Tressa the Merchant is a familiar face for anyone who played the original Octopath Traveler. She's still an excellent pick who has a variety of support skills, self recovery, defenses, and even a strong damage skill in Peerless Strike. Merchants are particularly valuable in your party as they passively provide more Leaves, and can actively Collect more from foes. So if you want to know how to make more money, add Tressa or another Merchant! Her ultimate can be quite useful but depends on enemy weaknesses. It's also worth calling out that her SP Saver passive is trainable, meaning characters with high SP costs can equip it once you unlock the training grounds.

Pius
- Recruited: in Cragspear by completing An Encounter with Pius.
- Class: Cleric
- Weapons: Staff, Fan
- Starting Battle Skills: Cleansing Fire, Stalwart Veil
Pius is a hybrid support / offensive caster. He can heal the party, rase their Def. and mitigate some of their damage taken. In addition he has access to fire magic. Pius can also provide passive support, granting life regeneration to his partner. While the AoE heal is nice, you may find him a bit weaker than other support characters like Saoirse. His ultimate works similarly to Delitia's, debuffing enemy defense while buffing ally offense. It's arguably a bit stronger since this hits both physical and elemental but doesn't come with defensive benefits to your party.

Therion
- Recruited: in Cragspear by completing An Encounter with Therion, after Ch.2 for Master of All.
- Class: Thief
- Weapons: Dagger, Sword
- Starting Battle Skills: Steal, Wildfire
Therion is a Thief who can steal from foes (and excels at it). Stealing from weak enemies isn't particularly useful, but if you steal from bosses you often gain mastered skills. Your odds of success depend on the enemy's HP and how much you boost the skill. In addition Therion has both HP and SP Thief giving him solid sustain. His BP Thief ultimate does considerable damage in addition to generating BP for Therion. Consider pairing him with someone else who can swap from the back row to take advantage of his Assassinate skill. He also has solid debuffing skills.

El
- Recruited: in Cragspear at the start of Master of All Ch.3, Charles the Traveler.
- Class: Warrior
- Weapons: Sword
- Starting Battle Skills: Level Slash, First Aid
El is a special hybrid caster similar to Sazantos. She mixes sword attacks and Light spells. While her move set is similar to Sazantos, and she even has the Almighty buff skill, her healing and utility is a bit weaker. On the other hand. Vacuum Slice is a great sword move for single target damage and Divine Light is one of the only elemental skills that can hit 4 times thanks to the boost interaction. El's Of Equal Might passive means you want to focus on equipment to boost one attack stat as much as possible. For example a Spirit Sword gives +60 Phys., +60 Elem. Atk. but a Greatsword gives +80 Phys. Atk. which also becomes +80 Elem. Atk thanks to Of Equal Might!

Ludo
- Recruited: by progressing Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 3: A Merchant Named Ludo.
- Class: Merchant
- Weapons: Spear, Bow
- Starting Battle Skills: Spearhead, Appraisal
As you rebuild Wishvale, there's a point at which you need a Merchant. That's where Ludo comes in! He has a good mix of offensive skills, buffs, and debuffs. His Negotiation skill is particularly useful if you want to maximize your EXP and money gain every turn. Ludo also has the unique ability to lower enemy Shield Points. It might not seem like an impactful ultimate at first glance, but against some of the game's toughest bosses can mean the difference between a clean break and coming up 1 hit short! Consider giving him additional multi-hit skills to take full advantage of his Fierce Rush passive.

Primrose
- Recruited: in Sunshade by completing An Encounter with Primrose.
- Class: Dancer
- Weapons: Fan, Dagger
- Starting Battle Skills: Lion Dance, Moonlight Waltz
Primrose is a Dancer who specializes in buffing allies. Her attribute-raising effects are particularly efficient thanks to her passive, The Show Goes On. While Primrose is a strong character on her own, she does somewhat live in Saoirse's shadow thanks to fulfilling the same role. Arrowstorm work similarly, but hits all foes making it an incredible AoE break skill. While not specialized for buffs or debuffs, H'aanit also has Take Aim which is an accuracy buff that's great when fighting Caits, or higher level foes. Last but not least, Patience gives a random chance for H'aanit to gain an additional turn. This is unreliable, but can be incredibly powerful when you high roll. - Starting Battle Skills: Dance of Mist, Storm's Refrain
Unlike previous dancers, who are primarily focused on providing support by buffing allies, Goodwin provides support by debuffing enemies. These include lowering foe evasion and causing them to act last which can be particularly useful against Caits and high level enemies. In addition, he has several solid lightning themed skills making him an excellent choice of the offensive caster role. Isla
- Recruited: Gather all 5 letter fragments then head to the Isle of Sages.
- Class: Cait Scholar
- Weapons: Tome
- Starting Battle Skills: Double Slap, Arcane Meteor
Most scholars are elemental casters, whereas Isla specializes in non-elemental damage. This means Isla is less useful for breaking enemy shields, but makes up for it with unparalelled raw power thanks to hard hitting skills, and a high damage ultimate. All of the game's scholars are strong, but Isla is a fan favorite thanks to the power of Ulti-Meow. Remember to stack SP on accessories to increase your ultimate's damage (at least until you cap out). Remember to use Sheer Focus to maximize single target damage, and Curl up to restore SP after nuking.

Carinda
- Recruited: after completing Bestower of Power Ch. 3 and then An Encounter with Carinda.
- Class: Merchant
- Weapons: Polearm, Bow
- Starting Battle Skills: Penetrating Thrust, Recuperate
Carinda has a toolkit somewhat similar to Protagonist Merchant. However, by the time you get her there are better options like Ludo. Her Soaring Javelin is a fairly strong signature skill, and Tricks of the Trade can be useful when facing physical attackers. But ultimately most of her best skills are trainable and available much earlier through the Protagonist Merchant so you probably already have them on your Merchants and Hunters, leaving little room for Carinda in your party.

Xerc
- Recruited: An Encounter with Xerc, this quest appears after you complete Bestower of Power Ch. 2.
- Class: Scholar
- Weapons: Tome, Staff
- Starting Battle Skills: Icewind, Tornado
Xerc is arguably the weakest Scholar in Octopath Traveler 0, but he's still pretty strong. His unique Soulstone Mastery is an interesting effect, but Soulstones cost money, or farming time so you don't want to be using them frivolously. Meanwhile, Stroke of Genius is far weaker than Alexia's Pray, or Isla's Purr-omote, since it gives random buffs. Soulstone's Might can be incredible if an enemy has enough elemental weaknesses, but otherwise it needs to be used when the enemy is broken to avoid suffering a damage penalty on most of the hits. Last up his SP Luck passive (which has a chance to prevent BP from being expended) is awesome, but can be trained and used on anyone.

Ophilia
- Recruited: An Encounter with Ophilia, after progressing the "Bestower of" questlines.
- Class: Cleric
- Weapons: Staff, Fan
- Starting Battle Skills: Heal Wounds, Holy Light
Ophilia is a Cleric who specializes in support and healing. This means she has limited offensive capability, and is often better suited to hanging out in the back row. Her signature skill is Revive, which resurrects all fallen allies in your party! This is a game changer and can save you when a super boss wipes out your entire front row. Normally you'd need to use a rare Almighty Olive, but Ophilia can bring everyone back. She's also quite durable thanks to Saving Grace, and you can train this to make any party member tankier by repeatedly healing them. Last but not least, Divine Protection nullifies enemy damage giving you a chance to break shields or set up buffs. All of this combined makes Ophilia an excellent support who can be a real life saver.

Reime
- Recruited: An Encounter with Reime at the subterranean arena in Victors Hollow.
- Class: Warrior
- Weapons: Sword, Polearm
- Starting Battle Skills: Twofold Slash, Hilt Strike
Reime is a multi-hit fiend. She has Lotus Blade and Swormblade, both of which multi-hit by default. In addition, her Fierce Rush passive makes her an excellent choice to teach a skill like Thousand Spears. You can also frequently spam boost on her thanks to BP Luck, and charge her ult incredibly quickly with Battle Refinement. Judicious Blade is another strong skill, which hits incredibly hard when sacrificing a large number of buffs, but oftentimes her multi-hit attacks can outperform it due to the per-hit damage cap of 99,999.

Richard
- Recruited: After completing Bestower of All Ch. 1
- Class: King
- Weapons: Sword, Polearm
- Starting Battle Skills: Vanguard Steel, Defensive Command
Richard has a warrior-like skill set, with an ultimate made for buffing allies. His Take Command ultimate is an incredibly powerful party wide buff with a generous duration. You can further enhance his ability to buff allies through passives like the Leadership Mastery which increase the effects of augmenting skills. While Richard can directly attack enemies, most of his offensive skills are limited, so you need to fill in the gaps by teaching him Sword/Polearm skills via masteries. Consider buffing his speed to trigger High Morale and getting your party a free attack buff.

Bargello
- Recruited: Complete Bestower of All Ch. 2.
- Class: Lord
- Weapons: Dagger
- Starting Battle Skills: Double Edge, Lower Defenses
Bargello is a Thief with a twist. His passive, A Step Ahead allows him to act first at the start of battle giving him an extra turn and adding +1 BP to everyone in your party by the time the real first turn starts. This combos nicely into Mafioso which rewards you for acting first. In addition, Frenzied Rampage, his second signature skill hits fairly hard and strikes 4 times making it a good way to break shields. Just keep in mind you take some recoil damage when using it. His kit is rounded out with more dagger skills, some buffs/debuffs and the Unbridled Courage passive, which rewards Bargello (or anyone if you train the skill), with enough BP for a max boost when breaking an enemy.

Alaune
- Recruited: Bestower of All Ch. 3
- Class: Queen
- Weapons: Tome, Fan
- Starting Battle Skills: Heal Wounds, Holy Light
Alaune is a modified Cleric with unique offensive light magic. She competes with Ophilia as one of the top healer/revive characters as her Prayer for Tomorrow ultimate can revive all allies in addition to healing and restoring SP. Just keep in mind there's a bit more investment than Ophilia's version as you need to charge your ultimate! In addition, Alaune has solid offensive spells with skills like Radiant Light which multi-hits and Light of Judgment that does great damage. Remember to pair her with an ally like Richard or Bargello who benefits from acting first. This way you can make the most out of her Encourage passive.

Tatloch
- Recruited: Bestower of All Ch. 4
- Class: Empress
- Weapons: Fan, Axe
- Starting Battle Skills: Wild Strike, Great Winds
Tatloch's Empress class is somewhat of a hybrid between Dancer and Hunter. You get a wealth of multi-hit attacks for breaking shields, combined with powerful effects to debuff enemies. Disintegrating Dance is one of the best ways (outside of helpers) to mass lower enemy defenses. In addition her unique "enchant" debuff turns your enemies against each other while leaving them vulnerable to a devastating strike from Tatloch's ultimate. Her toolkit is powerful, just remember that like Goodwin she focuses more on dealing damage and debuffing enemies, than she does on buffing or supporting allies, so plan your team accordingly.

Rondo
- Recruited: Bestower of All Ch. 4
- Class: Knight Ardante
- Weapons: Sword, Staff
- Starting Battle Skills: Cross Strike, Divine Light
Rondo's toolkit is similar to that of Sazantos (but significantly weaker), which makes sense given their interactions throughout the game. But there are a few key differences to keep in mind! His Focus Energy only buffs offensive stats and the Sacred Flame's Blessing cannot be used to heal allies. The core of his kit still involves a mix of sword skills and offensive light magic, and he still has a way to exploit additional weaknesses in Holy Flame (albeit a weaker version than what Sazantos has). But at least Rondo doesn't constantly leave and rejoin your party like a tsundere trying to get your attention.

Solon
- Recruited: Bestower of All Ch. 5.
- Class: Wise King
- Weapons: Tome, Sword
- Starting Battle Skills: Cross Strike, Fireball
Solon is a Scholar with a Sword and some debuff skills. His battle skill toolkit is a fair bit weaker than many of the other characters you get towards the end of the game. However he does bring something unique to the table: his Hawk of Orsterra ultimate. This reveals all weak points on an enemy and buffs the damage you do when breaking shields. This means that Solon still fits well into some parties, especially those built to punish weak points through multi-hit attacks. In addition, recruiting him gives you access to Of Equal Might which can enable interesting setups on other characters by making it easier to scale Physical, or Elemental attack on someone who might not normally have easy access to that.

|---|---|---|---|
| Cross Strike | 12 | Deal sword damage to a foe. | Yes |

Eltrix
- Recruited: Bestower of All Ch. 5.
- Class: Captain
- Weapons: Sword, Bow
- Starting Battle Skills: Twofold Slash, Stout Wall
Eltrix is an interesting tank character because she can force enemies to attack her. Normally, Provoke effects are unreliable but Eltrix has 2 ways around this. The first is her Back Row Protection passive, which allows her to take damage for her paired ally. Then her ultimate Lofty Rampart lets her take damage in place of all allies and massively bolster her defenses. If you are able to keep her health topped, either by healing her past her max HP and give her a skill like Parry (or better yet a counter-attack), this leaves the rest of your party more or less free to deal damage without worrying about defense. Just be careful when you use Lofty Rampart, as it only lets Eltrix avoid 1 lethal attack, she needs enough health and healing to stay up.
Eltrix's Skills
| Skill | SP Cost | Effect | Train |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twofold Slash | 8 | Deal sword damage to a foe 2 time(s). | Yes |
| Stout Wall | 6 | Raise own Phys. Def. for 3 turn(s). | Yes |

| Defensive Maneuver | 12 | Raise the Phys. Def. of the entire front or back row for 2 turn(s). | No |
| Sublime Slash | 45 | Deal great sword damage 3 time(s). | Yes |
Ultimate Skill: Lofty Rampart, Raise own Phys. Atk. / Phys. Def. and take damage in place of allies for 3 turn(s). Survive an otherwise lethal attack with 1 HP remaining (one time only). Additional levels extend the duration to 4/5 turns.
