Chapter 3 - Mibu Wolves

Head to the Barracks

Ryoma has resolved to join the Shinsengumi. Their barracks is in Rakugai, which is north of Fushimi, the part of town you currently reside in. This trip is a little longer than any you’ve taken so far, so be sure to take care of business in this part of town, like visiting the Komaki Dojo, where you can unlock special Brawler abilities, or spending your Virtue at the shrine.

When you’re ready, head through the now open gates north of the market. A cutscene will begin of two ronin talking about Ginryu, a swordsman with mesmerizing moves. After their conversation, follow the alley into Rakugai, where you can bet on chicken races, or buy new weapons. From the alley, head north, passing the arms shop and the Kurogane Blacksmith, where you will trigger a cutscene.

The blacksmith can create or enhance your equipment, including armor and special weapons. You need to bring the right materials and money, but his work will definitely come in handy later, so remember him.

As you leave the shop you’ll see a Palanquin Bearer, who serves as a taxi, taking you to the various parts of town. Follow the path north to the pink marker on your map. If you’d like to earn special abilities for your Wild Dancer Style, head north to the Ginryu Dojo first.

A boss fight is coming up, so be sure you’re stocked up on healing items as well. In the next part of town, follow the path west until you reach a staircase, then follow it up to start a cutscene and another boss fight.

Boss Fight: Nagakura Shinpachi

Naturally this is the toughest boss fight yet. Shinpachi can hit very fast and a full combo can take a fifth of your health or more, depending on your ability upgrades. He’s also using Tennen Rishin Style, which we’ve fought before. Luckily he’s letting you use whatever style you like, so if your swordsmanship isn’t up to it, switch to Gunman styleand use the same tactics you used against the Masked Man in Chapter 1. Dodge his attacks and counter with a Flame Round, then unload with regular attacks until he gets up.

This time the fight will go until his health is depleted but dodging and counter attacking works wonders against him, due to his commitment to combo attacks. Be careful if you try to use Heat attacks on him, he’s a skilled fighter and will require an additional quick time event to ensure you succeed, but the extra damage may be worth it. Speaking of Heat, Shinpachi has his own Heat meter, and will start to glow yellow after a while. Be extra careful not to get hit when he’s in this state, because his attacks will stun you, leaving you open for extra attacks. Once you’ve beaten him, you’ll receive a new piece of armor, a headband that prevents being stunned.

Head to Tsubakiro

After various cutscenes, you’ll be shown to your new room.

When you exit you’ll be prompted to meet the deputy chief at Tsubakiro, so leave the Shinsengumi Barracks to the south and follow the path back into town. You’ll activate a short conversation between two citizens, talking about an arms dealer with great skill located in Rakugai, this is hinting at a ‘dojo’ for your Gunman style. Continue into town and follow the road directly east, across the bridge and through the gate.

Gion is a relatively small area, so you won’t have to travel far to meet with the deputy chief. You will want to prepare yourself with healing items or equipment upgrades however. When you’re ready, head east and north through the small gate, and Tsubariko will be on the right.

Entering will begin a cutscene and another boss fight.

Boss Fight: Man in White

This fight is a step down from Shinpachi. The Man in White attacks slower and usually does a two-hit combo. If he attacks with a longer combo, his slower attack speed means you can often dodge away after a few hits. Like Shinpachi, however, he also has his own Heat style, and when he starts to glow red his attacks can set you on fire. Be sure to dodge those and use your preferred fighting style to deal with him.

I found Gunman and Swordsman worked well, due to their respective special shot and quick combo strikes. Wild Dancer deals less damage but allows you to dodge to interrupt your combos in a pinch. One of his special attacks is telegraphed when his arms are wide open and he walks slowly toward you. This is a good time to take several shots at him but don’t get close to him, because he will grab you and hit you with a combo that can’t be escaped. Don’t let your guard down and you’ll take down the Man in White in no time, rewarding you with the Ivory Sword and the end of the chapter.
