Definitely meant to be played with friends. Decent open area but somewhat makes it feel smaller than the first game(it’s not). Love the character variety and move sets and the sprite work is best in class.

The art is gorgeous and the music is great. Everything else is... eh. The script is downright "newgrounds flash game from the 00s" bad. The gameplay is quite fun for the first hour or two but has absolutely zero shake ups: for a game so deeply modeled on the River City Ransom games, the fact that there are no new moves to buy or unlock is absolutely baffling.

This game is totally on brand for any Scott Pilgrim fan. A match made in heaven for anyone who likes beat’em up and looking for a follow-up for Scott Pilgrim VS The World The Game. A must play.

As a HUGE Scott pilgrim fan (honestly my entire personality at one point), I was so so hyped for this game. A beat em up from the makers of TMNT:SR in the world of SP sounded incredible. And with the cast of playable characters available as well as a unique story different from the anime and comics I was so ready. So when I say I had a good time, I mean it. I had a good time playing the game, beating up demons and vegans and spamming square and x because that air hop move is just too good. But the game left a lot to be desired. For one, there’s a map to explore but you don’t really do much exploring. You’ll always know where to go with the objective marker, but if you explore you’ll only find something to either increase your stats or get gold (the rare occasional encounter gets you a new assist but these are so few inbetween). There is also nothing in the way of collectibles or lore for text on each multiverse which was disappointing. I wanted to know more about these alternate worlds and their characters but was left with just a few lines of dialogue and my imagination to fill in the rest. That’s fine in itself, but giving more as a reward for exploration or completing mini objectives whilst focusing on main missions would have been great. Combat is slick too and very fast, with each of the 7 characters playing surprisingly different from one another. But the game feels like it punishes you for switching characters mid adventure when you’ll have one character on lvl 80+ and then another at lvl 16. New game plus does a good job of at least adding some netting. Positives remain though, the music was incredible as always when made by this band. The pixel art is gorgeous and the world is vibrant. I also liked the ROG elements of the game and Young Neil as an assist was just wayyy too OP but in the best way possible. Also it’s Scott Pilgrim content - no matter what I will always have a smile on my face when I see these beloved characters in new situations.

Scott Pilgrim EX is the latest in a long line of retro revivals from Tribute Games, and like all of its previous works, the developer has done an admirable job of producing a beat ‘em up that builds on its predecessor while adding much appreciated gameplay depth and plenty of replayability.
