Death takes W, N. SMITH

Walter N SMITH ,77, native of Jefferson County, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He had been in failing health the past several years and entered the hospital Friday a short time before his death.

Last rites will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester C Werft officiating. Burial will be in the Glasgow Cemetery

Walter N SMITH was born on Aug. 13, 1895 in Jefferson County
He was the son of Nuby and Anna GIBERSON SMITH. Smith lived his entire life in Jefferson County and served overseas during World War I with the 133 Engineers. He helped build the Pershing Stadium in France.

He was united in marriage Jan. 24, 1934, to Mildred M, HEISEL who survives The family home is on rural route 3 eight miles southeast of Fairfield.

Other survivors include four sisters, Hattie E SMITH Mrs Elsie HALL and Mrs Birdie HANNA all of Mount Pleasant; and Grace WIDICK Burlington.

Smith was preceded in death by one brother.

No children

When Walter died his widow put the family farm up for auction and sold it. This was the original two 40 acre parcels, section 23 Cedar tws, purchased by Nuby and Albert G Smith in 1847-48 It is located on Rural route 3, 8 miles south of Fairfield.

It was purchased by Verda Baird and her husband Albert. At first they lived in the original house but later had it demolished and replaced it with a new one.

Stade Pershing: built 1919 by American engineers and demolished in 1960. It hosted inter allied games in 1919 and then presented to France as a gift from the people of the United States.
