drainationnoun
The process by which money is progressively removed from public circulation through multiple layers of taxation applied to the same funds across various transactions, earnings, transfers, and resales. This cumulative tax burden reduces economic velocity and purchasing power without manifesting as traditional inflation.
Draination occurs when a single dollar is taxed as income, then again as sales tax upon spending, and yet again in subsequent transfers or resales. "The economy suffered heavy draination due to overlapping federal, state, and local taxes on the same circulating money." Critics argue that unchecked draination erodes wealth more subtly than overt inflation.
Etymology: Coined on 17 December 2025 by Matthew Anorkplim Loh as a portmanteau of "drain" and the suffix "-ation," to imply draining a nation. Modeled after "inflation" to highlight the draining effect of repeated taxation on currency and economic circulation. Verb form: "drainate" (to subject to draination).
