Look, I feel like I should like this name more than I do. I'm a major fan of Mindy and Wendy, and those names end with a -dy like Sandy, so in theory I should like this name. Yet it's a name I don't really click with in practice, at least alone. I don't know why. I don't envision this on some prostitute, I'm not one to judge names based on how likely I think they are to be given to strippers. Maybe because it sounds a lot like sand, but I don't hate sand. Maybe it's because of characters like Sandy the squirrel or Sandy Griffin, but I don't have strong options on either. Maybe it's too dated, but I like dated names and names from Sandy's time period. Maybe it's rough but Sandy never came across as a name grating to say or hear. Maybe Sandy Hook and Hurricane Sandy are unpleasant associations? Probably. I don't know, it just won't click with me, it's weird. That being said I am open to it being a nickname for names like Alexandra, Alessandra, Cassandra, Sandra itself, or if you think it's male, Alexander, Stanford could work. I personally think it's more of a girl's name, but if you think it's a boy name that is fine too. In short, Sandy is a good nickname, but it doesn't really click with me alone. Sorry. I still think it's good, just not great.

Can also be used as a nickname for Cassandra.
Luvbug86 3/1/2024
It sounds dated, like a 50/60s name... Also I knew a dog with this name so it's hard to imagine it as a human name.
Brigitta1998 2/4/2024
Sandy could be a nickname for the male names Sanford, Sandford, Cassander and Lysander.

I feel like this name is very unisex and charming. The first Sandy that I ever met was a man. He was tall, had lightly-tanned, Caucasian skin, big muscles, strawberry blonde hair, and a smile on his face. Only recently have I met a woman named Sandy. I mostly think of Sandy Cheeks from (SpongeBob SquarePants) and that man I used to know. This is a strong-willed, but playful name for anyone.
ETA: I was in 2nd grade at the time of the Sandy Hook shooting. My condolences for everyone who has been affected. For me, it instilled fear of going to school and trembling anxiety (even though I’m literally miles and miles away!). But, that doesn’t stop me from loving the name. I used to have problems with the name Adam, however.

Cute name. I feel like it has too many negative connotations in the United States to genuinely be used, though. Like another commenter said, when I hear Sandy, I think of the Sandy Hook shooting and hurricane Sandy. Use Sandra as a feminine alternative.

Not good, not bad, just a simple name, maybe sounds a little bit too sweet, too soft, probably a better fit for a female name. For males it looks too soft. Good nickname for Sandra, but as a full name it feels childish.

I’d only use it for a cat.

This strikes me as a nickname for Alessandra, though not one I would use. It reminds me of a dirty-blonde girl that's WAY too spoiled.

I love Sandy as a nickname for Alexander. It's a bizarre name for a girl, and PLEASE don't spell it Sandi, Sandie, Sandye, etc., that's just mean.

In the movie identity theif, the main character is a man named Sandy. He gets teased for it and thinks its strange, but I personally like this name more for boys and had a feeling that it was originally masculine. For some reason, I like if for boys but hate it on girls!

Much prefer it as a boys name and the majority of people I know with this name are male, and the only girl I know spells it Sandi.
― Anonymous User 7/2/2012
Sweet, gentle name. Prefer it spelled "Sandie" for a girl or woman.
Awful name. Anything that ends in "dy" is ugly. Andy, Mindy, Mandy, Candy. Gross. As a prostitute's alias - ok, as a first name - not ok at all. Even uglier when "y" is swapped with "i".

Two girls I know use it as a diminutive of Sunday.
Also in Greece many girls named Kyriaki (=Sunday in Greek) use it as a nickname.

I like Sandy Cohen on The OC however I think this is not good for boys. A grown man needs a stronger and more masculine name.

Can also be spelled "Sandi".

I can't really see this name on guys anymore, it sounds very feminine and cutesy. It's a nice nickname for Sandra, which sounds a tad harsh, whereas this name has a soft sound to it. My associations to this name are quite negative, though. The name sounds like a mean high school girl name from the 90s, and the series Daria with its mean and manipulative character Sandy Griffin probably has a lot to do with that. On the other hand, it sounds like the name of someone a bit bubbly and ditzy.
In the Time Quartet series of books by Madeline L'Engle, Sandy Murry is the twin brother of Dennis Murry. He is also the brother of Charles Wallace Murry and Meg Murry. In A Wrinkle in Time, he doesn't appear too much, but Many Waters features his twin and him very prominantly as main characters.

Ha ha! Sandy Cheeks is the name of the squirrel on Spongebob! Ew. And the annoying girl in "Grease." Not my recommendation of a good name for a kid.

A correction - or rather, addition - to a previous comment: Sandy Cheeks from SpongeBob's real name IS Sandra, but I do think it also is a reference to her fur. :D

I think Sandy is better as a guy's name than for a girl. I quite like it.

Long since used as a nickname for Alexander in Scotland. I actually like it better as a boys' name; for a girl it's sort of tired and dated.

Sandy is the name of the energetic squirrel in "SpongeBob Squarepants." I don't think Sandy, in this case, is associated with the names Alexandra or Sandra. She is named that because of her color and because she's a "land squirrel." An actress who bears this name is Sandy Duncan.
