There aren't too many names I feel are adequately suitable for both genders. Robin however certainly makes an acceptance to that. It works well on either gender. Although I do prefer it slightly more for a boy due to it's less frequency and it's readily available nicknames of Rob and Robbie, Robin works well on a girl as well. The name is slightly dated, but it's honestly one of the best nature-themed names out there. For that reason, I will always view Robin as a classic and unisex nature themed name. I agree with others regarding the variant of Robyn. Please just use Robin for a girl. Please. The colors that I associate with this name are that of a Robin bird. Naturally.

I don't understand why people even started using this name on girls in the first place. This has always been a male name. Those "debating" whether Robin is more masculine or feminine probably need to get their priorities straight. There are more important issues out there. However, as the authors of this website pointed out, many parents who used the name may have been influenced by the bird. Bird names are not as common as flower names or jewel names, but when they do occur they are often feminine (Lark being a trendier example). Even Jay is at least sometimes used for girls. The variant spellings of "Robyn" and "Jaye" may be used to signal that the bearer is a female--since variant spellings are often just that, signals that the bearer is a female. However some parents may find these spellings a little TOO fancy or artificial for their tastes. And it's hardly universal. As with other non-gender specific names (Lee/Leigh), spellings are scarcely 100% masculine OR feminine. Rock musician Robyn Hitchcock is male--and Jaye Davidson is, well, androgynous at least.
