In Greek mythology he was a king of Pisa in the Peloponnese, a region that was supposedly named after him. As a boy he was killed by his father Tantalus who served his flesh as an offering to the gods, though they eventually restored him to life. Later he won the hand of his wife Hippodamia in a chariot race, an event that was said to have led to the first Olympic Games.
