ilovenames123 12/21/2023
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this name. Although I know no one named May, it sounds so pretty! I love it!
It’s a cute anagram of Amy and Mya and would be excellent twin / triplet names.
Inxpect 2/7/2023
Works great as a middle name. Is my favorite middle name actually.
― Anonymous User 11/17/2022
It's a very pretty month name like April, June, August, Winter and Summer buttt people would probably make jokes about your name.
ilovecats2006 10/27/2022
May...simple, sweet, vintage, beautiful. I’d love to see a little girl named May, or, even better, have one of my own. I’d consider it as a nickname for Mabel or Mavis, names I love, or just as a lovely stand-alone. I’d also use it to honour my mother who has a similar name.
sprout 10/19/2022
It makes a lovely first name. I prefer this spelling to Mae or Mai - they just look like misspellings to me. I know SO many girls my age with May/Mae/Mai as a middle name - it’s as common as Rose in my area. That’s why I prefer Rose and May as first names, sweet and beautiful in their simplicity.

Mayflowerss 12/8/2021
Very pretty sounding, very pretty month, I love it but I do think it sounds incomplete on its own. Emma May is pretty!
fairy 11/14/2021
Very pretty. I like it hyphenated to another first name.
Kate1410 10/3/2021
Very basic but cool I guess. Way better than Mae.
― Anonymous User 5/29/2021
It's adorable! May is a very sunny month where I live! :)
My parents don’t like this name because it’s the name of a month, nevermind! I hate it now!
Amy.B 3/24/2021
It's missing something...
tangledeva 3/18/2021
Love the season May, but doesn't sound good on a girl for some reason.
Crystal_Fox 3/8/2021
It's too simple by itself. This name is best when it's paired with another name.
StormySundae 3/3/2021
I knew a girl who spelt this Mae but I prefer this spelling better, it’s just cuter and looks complete.
Amy.B 1/10/2021
This is my middle name and I love it. It’s beautiful, short, sweet & not common. I prefer my May spelling or Mai, Mae is old fashioned.
― Anonymous User 11/29/2020
To the commenter below me, what’s wrong with common and old fashioned names? Are they terrible just because they are common and old fashioned?

Enoch 8/16/2018
I like May. It's sweet, and girly, and a flower name. Also I'm not against the fact that it is a month name. It looks way more elegant than Mae for me. But oh my God it's so overused as a middle name. I mean, it really fits with almost any name, but sometimes when I see that so many people have May as their middle name, I get the impression that their parents just didn't have any other, more original idea. Although I like when May is part of a double name, either as first or middle, or of a hyphenated name, or a nickname, for Maya, Maia, Mary, Margaret... And I think it should be used more as a first name, it's so charming. But not without any middle name, it's so short it that should be followed by something in my opinion.

May Chang is a character from the manga/anime Fullmetal Alchemist as well as a bearer of this name. Her first name is variously spelled as May, Mai, or Mei.
I had a (now elderly neighbour) called May - a real livewire who had a white poodle called Remus and a white cat called Mimi and was quite unforgettable in many ways. Her sister was called Gwen and was as quiet a May was extrovert.
So when I see the name May I always think (fondly)of my ex-neighbour though the name to me is a tad boring.
I only like the name if it signifies the hawthorn flower and the baby is born when that flower is in bloom. The name is too blah otherwise, and Margaret and Mary are better (but not Mabel - awful frumpy name).
― Anonymous User 8/15/2012
I really love this name; I think it'd work best as a middle name, but it sounds just as great to be used as an everyday nickname as well. Strong, feminine, and sophisticated.

This is the name of May Welland, a central character from "The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton. I think it's a little too plain to be a full name, but it sounds cute as a nickname or middle name.

As a general rule, I don't like month names (May, June, September, etc.). But I will admit that May can make a nice middle name. I'd never use it, though.
Joy12 6/23/2011
It's a month and very easy to remember. My personal opinion says that I like it for a middle name unless something is added to it, then I take it as a first name.
May is one of the Boatwright Sisters in "The Secret Life of Bees."
I think this name is simple and pretty, and also has a little touch of something extra about it. Because May Day is a time for fertility rituals and traditionally a time to deflower willing - or unwilling - virgins, there is something slightly sexy and illicit about it as well. It's a "still waters run deep" name.

Although it may (haha!) seem a bit quaint nowadays, it's very gentle and pretty - perfect for a girl born in the month of the same name.
LaSorciere 10/20/2009
May is one of my least favorite names. 3 letter names are sorta ridiculous.

In Limburgish, this name is a short form of Maria and Marie. The pronunciation would be MAHY: the 'a'-sound is slightly different than in the English pronunciation. It's similar to the 'ah' in 'aha' (as in: "Aha! I found something!").

A famous bearer of this name (as a surname) is Brian May. He was the guitarist from the band Queen. He wrote many of the band's songs, including hits like We Will Rock You, Fat-Bottomed Girls, Save Me, and other, more obscure songs like Father to Son, Keep Yourself Alive and '39. He is notable for having created his own guitar with his father. He calls this guitar the Red Special because of its color. Personally, he's my favorite member of Queen.
Pippin 3/15/2008
Most people are saying how much they like it as a middle name but I actually prefer it as a first. It's simple and pretty and yet very rarely ever heard as a first name (well that's as far as I've heard).
