Fred McFeely Rogers (March 20, 1928 – February 27, 2003), known professionally as Mister Rogers, was an American television personality, Presbyterian minister, and author. He was the creator, showrunner, and host of the preschool television series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which ran from 1968 to 2001.

Pros : it sounds unforgettable and is a hard name to be mispronounced.
Cons : when I hear it, I can only think of a fat, old or mid-aged man with big glasses.

Also...Fred isn't one of my favorites. It's too nicknamey and bland. Fred reminds me too much of Mister Roger's neighborhood, Scooby Doo, and the Flintsones. Those aren't very bad associations, but still. Frederick is nice, though. Fred would be okay as a nickname for Frederick.

Freaky Fred is a character from the cartoon, "Courage the Cowardly Dog". Although not a recurring character, Fred is well-known due to his creepy appearance. :)

Fred Toyosaburo Korematsu was an American civil rights activist who objected to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Shortly after the Imperial Japanese Navy launched its attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which authorized the removal of individuals of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast from their homes and their mandatory imprisonment in internment camps, but Korematsu instead challenged the orders and became a fugitive.

If someone asked me the first person I think of when I hear the name Fred, I would automatically say Fred Jones from Scooby Doo - which isn't necessarily a bad thing! In the tv show, Fred was always good looking and a leader. On the other hand, another Fred kids will think of is Fred Figglehorn, the Youtube character, who is insane.

Fred Burke was a major character in the later seasons of Angel. She was played by Amy Acker. In this case, 'Fred' was short for 'Winifred'. I thought it was cute, way better than the nickname Winnie.
Fred Figglehorn is the six year old character in the YouTube series, with examples like "Fred on Thanksgiving" and "Fred goes Swimming."
In both English and Dutch, Fred can also be a short form of Alfred.

Not that famous, but Fred and his twin brother George are the major pranksters of the Weasley family in J.K. Rowling's famous series "Harry Potter." They adore playing jokes and breaking rules, and of course they were born on (when else?!) April Fool's Day.
