Unlike other -ora names such as Cora, Nora, and even Flora, Dora shows no signs of a revival in the English-speaking world. I guess the Dora the Explorer association is too strong for many anglophones. It's a shame, since I always liked this name and it's better than a lot of girls' names that are popular now.

Can also be used as a nickname for "Isadora".

Everyone: OH ITS LIKE DORA THE EXPLORER
Me: Oh, it's like Dora from David Copperfield from Charles Dickens!
Have some class, people. Don't make fun of a name because it shows up on a cartoon for children. Dora is an aDORAble (pun intended) name that you should be proud to have.

This name is actually really beautiful with it's meaning of "gift of god". Anglophones as usual butcher everything, so they go "Oh ItS jUsT lIKe ThE XPLoRer". It's a good name don't listen to people here.

You know? It’s a real shame that Dora The Explorer is such a huge associate for the name. It’s a name that I’ve always loved. When I was younger, I liked to watch "Dora The Explorer". Though, most of my generation would probably make fun of this name. It’s very unique and special, so I hope it makes a comeback soon. Dora is loads better than Pandora, Isadora, and Adora, in my opinion. If you like it, I say...don’t listen to those who say, "Swiper, no swiping!".
I don't know of a SINGLE person who can see the name, Dora, and NOT associate it with Dora the Explorer. Seriously, I would say it was a nice name if it weren't for dumb Dora the Explorer!>:(

I could care less about Dora the Explorer. It's a decent name, but it's still not really my cup of tea.

bananarama 8/19/2008
Couldn't it also be short for Pandora?
― Anonymous User 6/27/2008
The name is admittedly old-fashioned, but sometimes names that have been unused for decades become popular again, and this could be one of them. I don't see why it couldn't. After all, the name is short, simple, it doesn't have unpleasant sound elements, and it is, in fact, pretty, even if not as pretty as Cora. I simply don't like the fact that it's derived from Theodora and thus Theodore.
It's also used in Slovenia as a short form form of Doroteja!

I don't mind this name but I would never use it because of Dora the explorer, though I'm sure my kids would love it. Lol.
