Dido's a very zany and whacky name. "Are you ready for Dido the Clown?" Sounds like a girl who loves to laugh and make you smile.

I think of the song "Thank You" and the Phoenician queen when I hear this name.
I think Dido a very endearing nickname! I especially like it after watching the movie Belle, about Dido Elizabeth Belle. I don’t know why but I always assumed it was a nickname for Dorothy? I think Dorothy/Dorothea, Dorinda or Dolores could be formal name for Dido. Also if dildo is the first thing you think of when you hear this name, that says more about you than the name itself honestly.

Dido Elizabeth Belle (1761 – 1804) was a British heiress and a member of the Lindsay family of Evelix. She was born into slavery and illegitimate; her mother, Maria Belle, was an enslaved African woman in the British West Indies. Her father was Sir John Lindsay, a British career naval officer who was stationed there. Her father was knighted and promoted to admiral. Lindsay took Belle with him when he returned to England in 1765, entrusting her upbringing to his uncle William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, and his wife Elizabeth Murray, Countess of Mansfield. The Murrays educated Belle, bringing her up as a free gentlewoman at their Kenwood House, together with another great-niece, Lady Elizabeth Murray, whose mother had died. Lady Elizabeth and Belle were second cousins. Belle lived there for 30 years. In his will of 1793, Lord Mansfield provided an outright sum and an annuity to her, making her an heiress.

I know that Dido could mean "fugitive, exile". The queen of Carthage Dido used this name only in Carthage when she was a fugitive from her homeland Tyre, where she used the name Elissa instead.

Dido was a princess of Tyre, and the founder queen of Carthage. Daughter of the king of Tyre, she was in love and married with Sychaeus, but her brother Pygmalion killed him to be the only leader of Tyre. Dido found out about the murderer by a dream, so she fled away from Tyre and she reached the north coast of Africa, where king Iarbas gives her as much land as she could fit in an ox skin. She cuts the skin in thinner strips so she gained 75,295 hectares of land, where she founded Carthage. She welcomed Aeneas, Troian hero who had to reach Italy to found the Roman kingdom, in her kingdom, and she felt in love with him. They had a relationship, but Jupiter forces Aeneas to leave. Dido, with her heart broken, pierces herself with Aeneas' sword and burns herself to death. In the afterlife, Aeneas sees her reunited with her first true love, Sychaeus.

But very nice too.

Dido is an English singer/songwriter.
Her music is very nostalgic to me.

Very rich old socialite name. Also...dildo.
noisynora 8/19/2020
I agree that it's way too close to dildo and dodo, and it always makes me think of the Smurfs, who called the baby smurf's diaper a "didey," for some reason. This name is awful. It needs to stay in the past with Goneril and Dorcas.

I ADORE IT! I've always thought that name was perfect for a possible daughter of Hermione Granger (Harry potter character) intstead of Rose, which I find pretty but boring compared to her mother's name.

Oh my Gosh, I misread this as "Dildo".
Luvbug86 9/16/2018
Awkward sounding... makes me think of dildo which, given the meaning of Dido, is funny.
silly_rabbit 10/3/2015
Dido is such a beautiful name. Maybe more of a guilty pleasure, due to the similarities to the word dildo, but nevertheless it's still gorgeous.

The Crüxshadows has a song called "Dido's Reply" on their album Dreamcypher. The album also has a song called "Elissa," which was another name used to refer to Dido.

Pronounced Die-Doe.
Brachaya 10/14/2010
Like "Dido".
PERSON 1: "I think we should see Aliens."
PERSON 2: Dido.
It also sounds like dildo, and dodo. There is just too much wrong with this name.

Dido is also the Spanish word for finger, I believe. DEE-doh.
Riddy Rose 8/11/2009
The Spanish word for finger is actually "dedo" so the association wouldn't be there for Spanish speakers.

I always think of the "Thank You" singer when I heard this name. I think she's a nice singer and all, but I wouldn't name my girl this. I'm worried that she would be made fun of and of course they might accidentally put an "L" in it (Which is a terrible thing to do). It does have interesting history though, which is cool.
CharlieRob 7/31/2009
I love this name, but I wouldn't use it because it sounds like "dydoe", which is a type of male genital piercing.
bananarama 7/25/2008
It's too close to a certain sex toy.
― Anonymous User 7/20/2008
The name has a bit of a child-like sound to it that makes me doubt it's going to suit most adults. Plus, the name only mkaes me think of the singer, whose music is rather dull and radio-friendly.
Too close to "dodo" to me. As for the Phoenician queen, her other name Elissa is SO much prettier!
Dido is the plucky heroine of several books in the Wolves Chronicles by Joan Aiken, starting with Black Hearts in Battersea.
Shasta 3/21/2007
It's also DIE-do.
Aqua 11/21/2006
In Latin it's pronounced DEE-do.
esma 8/31/2006
Dido is also the name of a modern band who sang "White Flag".
hafasatu 10/19/2005
Actually Dido is the name of the singer, Dido Armstrong. Otherwise correct.
